PLEASE BUMP! I really need some good advice as I'm out of town with this computer very soon for picture editing work.

Just upgraded from a nforce3 to a nforce 4 board.
Only upgrade:

motherboard, which was refurbish biostar through newegg.
6800agp 128mb to a 6800pcix GT 256mb
added an extra 120gb sATA HD

My computer powers on and everything works great.
Then I shut it off.

The only way to turn it back on is to unplug the power supply until you literally hear the power drain, plug it back on, then press the power button, sometimes twice.

I'm using my trusty enermax 330w, which reads perfect rails with SpeedFan.

Only thing I can think of is my powersupply. The new mobo needed a 24pin connector, so I had to get an adapter 20-24pin.

But it works sold in windows, only starting! Can it be the mobo battery? Do I just need to switch mobos, could it be the culprit? The swich connections on the mobo?
Thanks.
Ben

Hi, PSU contains an over current, over voltage circuit. I will shut the PSU down on too much current draw or a dead short. The only way to reset the circuit is to remove the AC power as you have already found out. Remove some of the load and try it. If that makes it better either something you removed is at fault or it's the PSU.
Good Luck, Jim

1) Motherboard was refurbished, that means someone else had a problem with it and returned it to newegg.com .

2) Polarity does not matter when hooking up the power switch to the motherboard.

3) Get a real 24PIN PSU from either 1: PC Power and Cooling 2: ANTEC EPS550 for $89. 20-24 PIN Adapters put unintended loads on the PSU and may cause motherboard instability problems.

Avoid PSU's with removable cables, they make for a good failure point.

4) Try using a 1 amp load resistor to help balance out the supply of power, it is very well know that a resistor can fix power load probems.

I sincerely believe it is the mobo. If you have a spare psu try it on this mobo. And if the same symptoms show up, you know it is the mobo. If the sypmtoms go away, then you know it is the PSU.

Yes, refurbished mobos go through testing, its not like they just hope it works, but my guess would be the mobo would be less stable then its original counterpart.

Could you post the voltages and amps on that PSU? Probably has most of the power on the 5V rail, with less on the 12V which would be powering the mobo, cpu, HDDs, and more. I'm not sure if PCI-X video cards run on the 12V, 5V, or 3.3V rail, but if it is the 12V then I could see where you would get problems.
