Power on Problem

We had a power outage, and my UPS took over. I powered down the PC via the XP menu. When we got power back, the UPS is working, there seems to be power to the motherboard (green light on) but the PC will NOT turn on.

Could it be the power button?

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Scott

Could be a multitude of things. Power switches on pc's do go bad and teh wires leading from it to the mobo can short out as well. Can you unplug everything (ups, tower, peripherals), reset the UPS, plug all back in and see if it powers up.

Try unpluging the power to the PSU, let it sit ofr a few mins, then try powering up.

Reset the UPS, tried to plug into non UPS outlet and still no start.

Must be inside the PC right?

Thanks

Based on what you've said so far, I'd say yeah. Have you tried resetting your MB's BIOS? Did you notice any spikes\browns\rippling prior to the blackout? Is your cable\DSL connection shielded?

I hope you can find a definitive cause quickly. I hate having to shotgun new parts when looking for a problem. Uh, actually, I kinda like it!

Anyway, good luck dude.

Hmmm... ok.

I'd try testing the PSU outside of the system; disconnect everything except a single HD and jump the PSU via these instructions. If you can't get the PSU to power up I'd assume that is where the problem lies.

My cable modem is connected via my network and therefore only cat5e.

I will try to reset the bios.

Do you think that is needed if the LED on the MB is on (goes off if unplug the PSU)? It seems that the MB is getting power.

Also, is there any other way to reset the CMOS/BIOS other than removing the battery?

Thanks

When the PSU is off, the LED and few other minor components are running of a standby voltage. The standby rails are not related at to rest of the rails in the PSU so it doesn?t necessarily mean the PSU is ok.

There should be jumper on your board to clear the CMOS, normally near the CMOS chip and/or battery.

It was the power supply. Replaced today and up and running. Thank you for the input and troubleshooting help.

thats a real bummer.......you said you had your system running via UPS when the electricity went out.......

I would also have that UPS checked......I would hate to see you going through PSU`s one after another....

I am glad you found the problem.

Now you need to try to find out why the old PSU was working before you powered down the computer when the UPS kicked in and why the PSU was NOt wroking after you turned everything back on...just my opinion!!

If it's a modern UPS it has self-test built in and will let you know it's having a problem.
