It's wierd here. I was working in Albany today when the power went out. Starting driving home and as I got west outside of Albany the power is fine. I'm a home now and other than the occasional brownout the power here is ok. We're on the Nimo grid as Albany is.
Wierd.

LOL

I hate CNN.
and the world hates you, thus the pieces of the puzzle are now complete.

Don't correct spelling if you can't be bothered to capitalize correctly.

Seriously, it's a poor man's generator. $20 at Wally-mart. If you're afraid your power might go out in winter and you'll freeze to death get a small radiator and one of those, or a large radiator and buy the deluxe $50 version with two outlets. (and a higher mA rating)

Good advice, but to really run a heater from it you will need a unit hard wired to the battery. I think the cigarette adaptor will only support 350W inverters and less.

i'm watching CNN and they're showing a road and one half of it is packed and the other half has no cars on it... in other countries people would just be driving on that empty side as well, going the wrong way

Older models, yeah. The wiring wasn't certified for that many W running through it. On the other hand my dad's '99 Dodge van can do something like 600W in theory. If the car isn't running though. I would suspect that if you were to turn off the lights, dim the dash panels and otherwise turn off any other electricity-draining stuff you could get a little more that 350W going through it.

Oh yeah, it's not too hard to hook up something to the battery. They sell cigarette lighter outlets at most auto parts stores, with instructions. (For like $15 though!)

Texas has it's own power grid? That's cool!

How the power grid works.

Interesting:
The power grid, essentially an interconnected grid of transmission lines, covers most of the United States as well as parts of Canada and Mexico. It?s divided into three major regions: the East, the West and Texas.

Why the hell does Texas get it's own grid? And why isn't all of Texas in the Texas grid? You'd think they'd tried to secede or something.

I think they do that along the Gulf Coast on occasion when a hurricane's coming and millions of people are having to leave the area at once (usually there's so much heads up time now though it's probably not necessary.) It makes sense if you know there's imminent danger. In this case I guess they're not opening them up that way because they're assuming there's no immediate threat.

Long thread-

Just what areas are supplied power by the Niagra grid? Doesn't any part of New England get power from it? You'ld think it would considering we closed most of the nuclear power plants here.
