does anyone have advice on changing the fan in an enermax power supply? i.e. connector types, etc.

i always just removed the tail that was on the fan already in the psu and soldered it to the one i wanted to replace it with. i believe they use a 2 pin connector.

My local store sells power supply replacement fans with the more common 2 pin header. I've seen them wired either way, so check polarity before connecting it (and reverse the wires if needed).

You can use a 3 wire fan too, but you'll have to make sure the right wires are in the right locations. The RPM sensor would go unused.

Welcome kman888! As suggested, the fans are easily replaced. Enermax (at least everyone I have opened) uses a plug to conect to the PCB inside. I would remove the old fan and compare it with what your are buying first. You could also just solder/splice the replacement in as well.

When fiddling around inside the power supply, you want to be very careful not to touch anything as the capacitors inside can hold a charge for quite a while.

Welcome 0rion! It is by far less expensive to replace a fan in a power supply than to just buy a new PSU. This is especially so if it is a well made Enermax, Antec, PCP&C etc. If you have a generic PSU of the $20.00 variety, then yes, I would say just get a new PSU.

if i'm just splicing the wires does it matter what the current (A) is for the new fan, does it need to be matched to the original fan? thanks for the replies.

i don't bother with the connector inside. i just cut the wire or yank the plug of the fan that i take out. i string the power cord through a grate or crack for teh new fan to get power inside the case like with normal fans. makes no difference and is easier. rather not play too much with dangerous psu
plus this way you can manually control your psu fans through fan controller.

Can't believe I have never thought of that, Might have to replace my fan....the one in my PSU has hardly any airflow and gets quite warm.

I would get an adjustable fan like the Enermax Whisper series fan or Thermaltake Smartfan 2 so you can adjust it to an acceptable noise level.
