Power supply for r9 290

Hi all,

Upgrading my pc and just wondering if my psu is powerful enough. I am going to a Asus z97 pro Mobo with asus directcu II r9 290 graphics card and 4960k cpu.

My existing power supply is a Corsair 620HX.

My only other issue is that with my current setup it will sometimes get stuck in a booting cycle where it will power on and off after going into sleep mode. I am hoping this is a motherboard issue as it is solved if I turn off the power supply for 10 seconds.

Your 600W on the 12V rail should be plenty to run that system as long as the PSU is in good shape and isn't really old or something. That 290 spikes at about 330W but draws about 220W or so on average while doing intense gaming, if I remember correctly.

I guess that is a good question..the power supply is probably around 5 years old at this point. Is that too old?

I was running the rig in my sig on that exact power supply, but with an overclocked i5 2500k (4.4GHz @ 1.28v), and it worked just fine.

I bought my HX620 in December 2007 IIRC. Only retired it because I needed a PSU for my HTPC.

Does the boot loop happen when you cold boot as well from a completely powered-off state?

Yes that is what I meant...tried to remember the digits off the top of my head and failed. No, the boot loop only happens from a sleep state from what I have seen which makes me think it's the motherboard. I guess I can always try to setup and only buy a new psu if it doesn't boot.

I'm not too well-versed in the topic, but I seem to recall there being some possible issues regarding sleep states with Haswell and older psus. IIRC something about a new ultra-low power state being introduced that some psus can't properly handle. If I'm not wrong (it's 430 am) then it might be worth looking into.

500W to 600W PSU will hold your config.
