I'm building a new computer and I have not got my new PSU yet but I'm dieing to use it or at least start installing stuff. All the req. for the video card and mobo are met. Its a 500 watt PSU but it has a 20 pin connection and the mobo takes a 24 pin and has another 4 pin and a molex plug on board. Would if be ok to use this PSU? I tried to look for some info about this but nothing was a yes its fine. Thanks in advance.

my specs are:

AMD X2 4400+
EVGA 7950 GX2
MSI K8N-SLI
2GB XMS memory
DVD-RW

You don't know the brand of the psu? Some more specific info would help. There are good companies like Seasonic that make 500w psus but for every good power supply company there are 10 bad ones.

Seeing as between your processor and videocard you are dropping close to $1k it might be worth it to invest in a quality power supply.

i agree with thegimp.

for your question, yes, it can work. there's a connector or something you need to use. i'm sure someone'll post the detailed answer after me. unless your 500w psu is a fortron, enermax, seasonic, or other good name brand, return it

If you've got an old 20-pin power supply, odds are you can use it just fine in your motherboard. Especially for just "testing." There are only a handful of motherboards that have 24-pin connectors on them that don't work with 20-pin power supplies.

EDIT: EvilPaul!?? I know who you are... Tell yakko to just help you put the damn thing together as it is and that he should quit his bitching!!!! LOL! You should be able to post the rig and install XP with what you have and then swap out the PSU when it gets there.

Sunbeamtech Nuuo 550 W

Has all the features:
> Modular cable management
> Quiet...very quiet. Its got 2 fans, one 80mm and one 120 mm.
> Bright back-lit LCD panel that fits in 3.5 inch bay. Basically controls the fan speed (also you can plug in the case fan as an extra fan controller).
> Very nice cables, you know...coated ones.

Works like a charm on my rig (check my sig)

I'm sorry... Did someone in this thread ASK for an opinion on a power supply? Did someone in this thread even mention the Sunbeamtech?

Most people don't even ****** READ posts here anymore. They read the title ("Power Supply Question") and then hit the reply button.

Morons.

Dumb ass.... he was asking if he could use his old 20-pin power supply on his new 24-pin motherboard.

No... He got his new power supply yesterday. They built the PC today. I didn't get a phone call, so I'm assuming all is well.
