Power Supply Starts Up UNPLUGGED?

Quick question guys:

I just put together a new build, keeping only my old PSU. The system turns on for 1 second, but doesn't post and then turns off. Just a minute ago, I unplugged the power cord, and my fan started running--as if the whole system was running for a split second, on current from my UNPLUGGED PSU.

I assume this means my PSU is a POS. Can someone please confirm, so I can make a quick run to the store tonight? Thanks!

What brand/model PSU is it? PSUs have big capacitors in them that can hold a small charge for a while even after they are unplugged.

Antec TruPower II 550W.

I've put together several PCs (this is my 4th or 5th build) and it's the first time I've ever had a post failure. All plug connections, RAM set, video card set, are fine. System specs otherwise are below.

Also, I just did the "Corsair Easy PSU Test" (paperclip method) and my PSU fan doesn't spin. Looks like a dead PSU!

Not necessarily. Some PSUs won't start without load. But if you had your things plugged in and it still didn't power on using this method.

Heh carpet, I get you I just had the fan plugged in, and the thing didn't start up. I'm heading to the store, hopefully this is a fix and I don't have a DOA Mobo or even worse CPU/RAM..

I feel like with a dead CPU I'd at least have a post.

Hence this is why it pays off of having computer junk in the same room, don't have to run anywhere for spares

FWIW the Antec True Power II series came at the end of the bad caps episode that afflicted the industry, so no surprise it gave up the ghost.
