Power Supply Wattage Question for planned E6600 Build

Well, I have gone back and forth about this and got all kinds of conflicting information. I am looking at two different Enermax Noisetaker II models, one with 485W of total power and one with 600W of total power. Each has dual 12V rails with 22A on each rail max; the 485W model offers a total of 384W on the 12V and the 600W model 420W total.

My system will consist of:
  • Asus 975X or 965 motherboard
    2GB RAM
    E6600 processor
5 hard drives (2 being 10K RPM raptors)
PCI cards (TV Wonder, Audigy, Modem)
    5 fans (case and CPU)
2 optical drives, and a floppy
X900XT or equiv for a video card but do plan to upgrade to one of the newer DX10 cards as they become available and rumors have been that they are very power hungry (I do not plan to run Crossfire).

I, in no way, want my power supply to be the limiting factor in my planned overclocking and want sufficient power to be able to do so. I have an Enermax now and have been happy with it and the two models I have selected have a cord combinations that will work in my build.

Here's two links if you're interested:

485W Supply: Link1

600W Supply: Link2

Thanks for the feedback!!

Almost certainly the 450W option.

C2D + Nvidia (single) = 400-450
C2D + 7900GT SLI = 450W
C2D + 7900GTX SLI = 500-550W

C2D + ATI (single) = 400-450W
C2D + ATI crossfire =550W- 600W

Go with this instead:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817341002

After rebate, it is cheaper than your other choices.

It is quite often the PSU used by reviewers (including Anandtech) and it is a very capable PSU with 700W of room, a 20+4 mainboard connector, 2 CPU connectors (for 4 or 8 pin CPU power), 2 PCI-e connectors, 2 lines of PATA (4 pin MOLEX) and 2 lines of SATA connectors. All the cables are long enough to reach even in cases with bottom mount PSUs.

I use 2 of these in 2 Antec P180B's and they are excellent. (one with an e6400 and one with an e6700).

Wow, with all my devices and a wishful overclock of the E6600 to 3.5Ghz @ 1.4 volts (yeah I know that this is unlikely), it calculates 467W.

yes i would get something high powered if your going to OC. The most expensive psu i have bought before the one i have now is a 485w thermaltake psu. I decided this time to get a OCZ GameXTream 700w psu. One of the people on anandtech was doing some testing with psu and he said that he tried a popular 480w psu and it would not allow him to OC nearly as far as the 700w psu would. I would get at least 600w or over if your wanting to get a high overclock with a core 2.

Either of those are infinitely better than the other choices.

How are they better? The power output is the same, OCZ have a decent reputation for warranties, not to mention that they are all overkill. All you've got to do is justify spening between 60% and 100% more on a PSU than you need to.

OCZ has a "decent" reputation for warranty? LOL.

The first PC P&C I linked is the venerable 510W-SLI. It's got a 5 year warranty. Yes, it costs $50 more than the OCZ "700W" special but (IMHO) that is money very well spent.

I'm simply providing another option. The OP can make his own decision.

PC P&C makes some of the best PSUs, no question asked. It will give you a peace of mind and one less thing (but probably one of the most important things) to worry about when OC'ing. UNDER A CONDITION THAT YOU DON'T MIND NOISE. (It's not a Tornado but it can be quite annoying) They took this criticism and started a new line of more silent PSUs but I don't know much about them yet.

I would avoid Enermax PSUs in general. Their quality control seems pretty bad. For some reason Enermax attracts new comers who attemps their first build. (including myself some time ago)

That's with no overclocking. I wouldn't go any lower than a 600 watt, since he's gonna be running 5 HD's, two of which are 10,000 rpm. As a matter of fact, I'd probably go with an OCZ GameXStream. They have more power.

And Samsung ships their LCD panels to how many hundreds of different vendors? And how many are good and how many are crap? See what I'm getting at? Just because one vendor makes a product for another to slap their label on doesn't mean squat. OCZ slaps their badge on a lot of junk.

As for FSP quality, as I noted earlier, there is some debate about it. I've heard FSP has gone cheap in the last few months. I haven't had a chance to look at any personally recently.

Thanks for all the help--I guess I will spend the extra money for a more powerful power supply. More just to avoid to concern that the power supply is holding back my overclocking than anything else.

Whether or not FSP's quality has been lacking, I don't know. I do know that OCZ's psu's are the creme de la creme, right up there with PC P&C's. Well, slightly under PC P&C's, obviously, but awesome, nonetheless.
