This is the system I will be putting together over the next 1 1/2 months.
I already started buying some of the components.

Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce 4 or Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI motherboard

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor Socket 939 Winchester core

2 XFX GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express video cards

Corsair VS1GBKIT400C3 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200 memory

1 Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 160GB Serial ATA w/ NCQ hard drive

CoolerMaster Praetorian Aluminium Mid Tower Case (Black)

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Limited Edition sound card

NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive ND-3500A (Black)

Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM (Black)

NEC 1.44MB Black Internal Floppy Drive

Windows XP professional SP 2

Power Supply?

My only road block at this point is what power supply to use that would be adequate regardless of which motherboard I go with. I will not be overclocking. Just building a good all-around system that can play games and do some business apps. Would like to keep it under $100.00.

PC Power & Cooling Turbo-Cool 510 Deluxe. It's a bit pricey, but you don't want a cheap powersupply killing your two graphics card and pricey processor.

I'd be safe and go with at least 450 watts, although you might be able to get away with 400.

You can find many 430-450 watt PSUs by quality manufacturers like Antec, Vantec, Enermax, OCZ, Fortron, etc. for under $100.

I just figured out if I go with the Antec Neopower at $113.00 from ZipZoomFly the whole system will cost me just under $1500.00. What a deal right? These big computer houses must have an unbelievable markup on their computer systems! AKA Alienware amongst others.

Oh, they do. They do.

May want to consider going 1x 6800Gt now and later upgrading to SLI 6800GT's btw.

Or may not - it's kinda ymmv there. 6600GT's rock hard for their price .

Yeah maybe 1 6800gt is better at this point especially for future upgrading with a second card. Then again I can get 6800 ultra or better performance with the 2 6600gt cards for instant gratification. Hmm

i would go with a Fortron 530W or 550W PSU - not sure whether the SLI boards are going to require a 24pin connector, if they do, go with the 550. Also: Go with a 6800GT now, and then have an easy upgrade path later.

6600GTs are nice...I plan to buy one of those to last me until the 512MB cards come out. THis will be on a PCIE board, so I can use a single 512MB card until it's no longer cutting it, and then SLI when the need comes around.

The 6600GT is just going to be a bang-for-the-buck workhorse for the 6 - 12 months between now and 512MB onboard. After that, it'll be the spare in case the other gets blown

Ultra does, but it's not worth the cash imo compared to the Neopower.

Plus all sorts of bad things have been said about the Ultra line of PSU's.

agree one 6800gt is better than 2 6600gt so i would go with 6800gt and oc to ultra when you want and than get another one later on.

I'm still confused. Does anyone think the Antec neopower can power the above mentioned system? How much of a power supply's power goes toward the video card?

Do not get the Neopower. It has not been rated well and doesn't carry the Antec name like the Truepower does. THe truepower is legendary the Neopower just has the frills. If you are getting a system like that get a regular PSU. I would suggest the OCZ 520 or 600Watt as they are just as strong as the PCP&C yet much quieter. Right below those are Enermax then Antec, then fortron, Seasonic, tagan, etc, dont even look at thermaltake.

As for the video card get a single 6800GT, it is going to be faster and a better deal. Especially since you can still add a second one later.

Lets go nuts with this topic. Everyone seems to be talking about not being able to wait for the SLI motherboards and video cards and the endless possibilities but no one seems to mention how we are going to power all of this stuff. Even the pro reviews of these motherboards are very sketchy at best on power requirements and recommended power supplies.

i've been asking this question forever but never seemed to get a definitive answer...

are all eps12v (24 pin) server psus compatible with the new pcie 24 pin mobo's? none of the psus (antec true 550 eps12v) that i want, directly say that they are amd compatible and it's not something that i want to take the chance on.

i'm also considering the SILVERSTONE 520W POWER SUPPLY @gameve.com for $105. it has 2 12v lines totalling 31, which is good, and 40 and 45 on the 3.3 and 5 v lines respectively.

ME NEED ANSWER FROM ONE WHO KNOWS.

That's a great PSU. I have the 470W version. It's definitely >$100. Why do you need so much power for?
