Not sure why people would be scared of a welder or a torch. Why? Saws are much scarier to me. Recently using my table saw more but it makes me nervous and I have used it for 10 years and 4-5 blades later.

Whoever made the observation about the bench grinder, that guy sounds like he knew what he was talking about. I will keep that in mind.

I don't think I will ever own a bandsaw. That one scares me the most.

When I was in 7th grade, the shop teacher was very cautious on using it. He kept mentioning an incident where a student lost 3 of his fingers due to carelessness and that the band saw itself sometimes snap and slice across a students' faces.

Actually the saw stop uses conductance and jams the blade with a block of aluminum. It sacrifices itself and the blade costing up to a few hundred $ depending on what kind of blade you have but will save a limb!

We were working this job once, a good distance away from our town, and we were working with a some builders that we haven't worked with before and I'll never forget seeing one of the guys working with a chainsaw. He was sitting on the roof with his legs dangling over the edge, cutting the roof with the chainsaw between his legs. Got a big WTF from me.

when i was a roofer, this use of a chainsaw was typical. often times cause it was either easer/faster or didnt want to run a generator.
but i've used a chainsaw for many years, so i guess it never bothered me.

a plain old hammer and short, small headed nails bothers me more than a chainsaw.

It wouldn't be costly to make one for a table saw. Laser for sensor path , steel angle iron that could be spring loaded so that when the sensor triggers the angle iron is released into blade teeth under table. Could easily be mass produced for under $25-40.

Steel is too hard and would turn the blade area into a fragmentation zone with carbide tips flying away at mach 1+. A laser isn't going to to be able to distinguish the difference between a finger and wood since they are both opaque.

One of my friends did this while trimming a tree in his front yard. Ladder moved, his hand slipped, and he ripped a nice three inch long hole in his leg.

Precisely why I buy all my wood pre-chopped or rent a log splitter.

Most owners of chain saws are very hesitant to loan them to friends. Even very mechanically inclined friends. Because of the frequent real injury/ accidents that happen with them. The dreaded kick back.
In regards to snow blowers, many a college graduate made the mistake of clearing the snow throw shoot and lost fingers. I remember my 7th grade teacher telling the class about bringing his dad to the emergency room, losing 3. Trying to pass on a little wisdom, caution.

Chainsaw kickback can easily be averted from proper training.
Most people don't like to lend their saws because they come back with really dull chains from people touching the ground. D:

Saw zaw because or articulating shaft so close to hand and cutting through stuff where gas/electrical may be. I have every power tool and only been severely injured by saw zaw.

Radial arm saw is extremely dangerous way it "walks" the boards and walks twoards you. That;s why they are so rare even though they can do it all unlike table saw which is only suited for ripping.

Drill press if I had long hair.
