Nobody HAS to win which is why the jackpot has gotten so big. If the lump sum ever jumps by over 292 million dollars it will be possible that every possible number combination has been sold but right now it appears that a large number of possible combinations will go unsold for Saturdays drawing.

Newsflash - the jackpot is now $700 million USD. Largest ever jackpot in US history IIRC.

I think it will grow bigger by Saturday and what if no one wins? $1 billion USD? Whoohooo.

largest Powerball, I think. I want to say that Megamillions hit 800mil+ maybe 2 years ago?

Ever since they started one-upping each other on the terrible odds and grand jackpots, these lottos have reached absurd jackpots. I think there will be another tally tonight, and then at least 2 more prior to Saturday's drawing?

I think it will certainly go above 900.

Big jackpots built on the backs of big losers. Fuck the state. I won't play out of principle.

No it got to $652million. There was talk it would have been starting at $800million with the possibility of the first $1billion jackpot in the US if no one had won. Three people split that $652million.

When lottos get this high, the overall odds of the jackpot being hit is really high because 75% of the number combinations will have been bought. The odds of multiple winner is also higher. There is a great chance multiple people will win on Saturday.

It could realistically hit $1billion this go around if the ticket sales continue to hold up.

The whole purpose of the odds change was to create bigger jackpots more often creating more revenue for the lotteries.

And more revenue for the government in general, since lotteries are all paid for with post-tax funds and then they take another what, 40% out of the winnings?

Why do you hate education and prisons (and tax breaks for the rich)?

That. Why do you hate children?

Speaking of, I know some fucking idiot who spent 50% of his paycheck -- he was a public sector employee -- on lottery tickets or other state-run gambling establishments (e.g. the horsies). Government got a really good deal there.

Well, OK. Maybe that guy is a loser.

I buy into any work/friend group buys. I don't care about the odds, but fuck if they win and I'm the douchebag on the news who didn't join in and still has to go to work.

Nope. This $700 million is the largest in US lottery history. The last largest one was Mega Million with $656 million in 2012.

The largest jackpot in the world is Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad in Spain with over $2 billion USD in prizes but the jackpot is spread out and not just one large jackpot.

Just to clear this matter up from earlier:

To maximize the overall value of your winnings, most financial experts advise taking the lump sum.
Even after taxes, that option can net you more than $700 million over 30 years if you invest it -- even in something ultra-conservative like municipal bonds (which are tax free).
"But an overly aggressive [investment] portfolio or careless and outlandish spending can leave you penniless," Wells Fargo Advisors vice president of investments Scott Kaminsky said.

The last thing I would even worry about if I won was investing. Stick it in the bank, dont go nuts and live a VERY nice life. Give some to people, help others etc etc.
