Donate $990,000 to a charity with an operating cost of less than 15% of its donation revenue, and $10k to me to supplement my 10k a year full-time salary and I will be happy for many years to come.

Is Powerball like other lotteries where you can take one lump sum of 50% or take all the winnings spread out over 20 years?

Being a relatively young guy, I think I'd rather have it over 20 years. That way I wouldn't be able to spend it all, and I'd get the full 365 million (before taxes of course).

I know some people say it's better to have it all up front so you can invest it all right away. But who needs to invest when you've got $18 million a year coming in over the next 20 years?

What do you guys think?

the idea of taking a lump sum i guess stems from the fear of death. you cant enjoy it all. but at the same time, im sure if you die, the rest of the money finds its way to family. if you get it all at once, and in 10 years die.. you would likely still have a crapload of unspent money... now if it was put into a large swiss bank account, i guess you could earn interest on it, but... it all works the same. if you are young, do the 20 year thing. if you dont get all the money because of an unfortunate death.. well, someone in your family will.

Syringer sighting, eh? Fascinating thread.

Seems to be taking quite a while for the "proof", such as it is, to show up. Must not have a strong enough computer to really blaze through Photoshop filters like one would want to.

The idea of a lump sum is that you have the money now - because money loses value with time due to inflation and other factors. With a jackpot this size, it's sort of a moot point, because even if they pay it out over 30 years, you can bet that even in 30 years, 12 million dollars is still going to be a lot of money. You still wouldn't be able to buy as much with 12 million dollars in 30 years as you would with 12 million dollars today though. It's always a better deal to take the money yourself and invest it wisely so that you beat inflation.

I don't know how lotto payouts over time work, I'm not sure if you can transfer those to someone else in your will or not. I do know if you took the lump sum and invested it, you could will it to someone in the event you die.

That's why I would take the lump sum. I'd rather invest it and make sure it's there for my children in the event something happened to me. Plus I could make more money investing it and live simply off the interest...than getting payments once a year.

Well, you might as well put me on the list as well. I'd be fine with about 100 grand, so I could pay for tuition and get me a decent car.

This thread should get entertaining I think, at the least.
