My aunt and uncle have a place on the bay in Door County...they own a pantoon boat and a couple others. What's down in Southern Illinois though? You talking a small lake?

not at all. southern ILL is great. go a google earth search on marion il area. there are a ton of lakes around the area.

i was on crap orchard lake is something like 7k acres. its not a small lake by any stretch. not as large as some but still great.

You can defend it all you want but it's no different than a dude showing up looking like Rabbit from 9 mile saying he is a rocket scientist.

Add that to the fact that down here they get hurt and then try to sue the boat owner.

What am I defending? What do rabbit's, miles and rockets have to do with anything. Are you implying that I am not a responsible boater?

Sometimes you make zero fucking sense.

You should try sailing in San Diego Bay. I've passed a nuclear submarine coming into port while we were sailing out of the harbor on a 28' Ericson many years ago. We stayed well clear of him but it was just cool as hell to see a Los Angeles class nuclear sub under power gliding into port.

I've only seen that once in 13 years living here. It was something I'll never forget. There are frequently 1 or 2 aircraft carriers here too along with a number of other Naval vessels. You can't get anywhere near the aircraft carriers although I did take a pic of one.

This will give you some idea of how wide the bay actually is, we were closer to this side than downtown San Diego when I took this picture. This is the original resized. I really need to clean my sensor...

Here's a crop, sharpened a bit. By the way, we saw that big powerboat in the frame to the left about 4 or 5 times, he was just cruising up and down the bay.

When my Brother in Law was flying out of NAS Lemoore, we went to San Diego and got to tour the carrier on Coronado Island. They had kind of a family day for all the crew and officers to have the families come see the ship and tour all the workings, it was eye opening to say the least.

I can't even remember now what carrier he was on at the time.

By the way, the place we rented the boat from was off to the left side of the very distant shoreline you see in the right side of this picture. It took us 1 1/2 hours to sail back to the turning point you see there because we were sailing into the wind. You can tell by that sailboat in the pic that he is sailing downwind. Sailing back through those bridge towers is pretty tricky actually when sailing upwind.

Remember, sailboats have a far greater draft than powerboats and it is pretty shallow in many spots south of the Coronado bridge depending on the tides. In a keel boat you might have less than a foot or two beneath the keel in some areas depending on the tides.

I have skippered a much larger sailboat through here before.

What happens if you try to get near?

From some who've tried to get closer, the Coast Guard/Navy/etc. comes up immediately and gives you a single chance to turn away.

After that, it's up to them how far to escalate their response. The distance one can approach U.S. capital ships is not very close any longer, obviously.

A single chance? What are they going to do?

They actually have a floating barrier around the carriers and submarines docked here and a military patrol boat is on duty in the harbor at all times. They'll just sit there and warn off any craft that get too close, I've never gotten close enough to be approached but I have seen them speeding through the bay. If you don't respond I suppose they'll open fire. They have a machine gun mounted on their boat.

They will pull out their M4's and board your vessel, arrest you (this would be a military arrest so don't go crying to your lawyer for violation of rights), impound your boat. If you had anyone with you they'd be arrested with you.

If you have any doubts go rent a boat and ignore warnings to stop progress toward a Coast Guard Cutter...

I don't know what happens if you approach a military ship, but I'm sure that alkemyst is an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about. "Military arrest?" Where does he get this crap?

It's an easy science project to verify. Go to your nearest ocean and rent a boat for like $100 for an hour. Set a path directly toward any coast guard or military ship. Ignore their warnings.

I am sure they'd just think it was all for the lolz.

He's right. Getting too close to a ship underway would be treated the same as climbing over the fence at a military base. They have your ass and will do with you what they deem fit.

He is correct that if you do not heed the warnings given by the military watercraft patrolling the area you will be in deep dog shit, however there is no such thing as a "military arrest" since the military doesn't arrest civilians, it apprehends them. As Jules correctly pointed out, there is also a string of floating buoys/fencing preventing watercraft from actually pulling up alongside the vessels/piers. Google Maps clearly show it for either San Diego or Norfolk. It isn't set back a large distance from the vessels, but it is a definite barrier. You can see in the San Diego picture a bunch of watercraft (under power) maybe a half mile from the piers.

Alky, tsk, tsk, don't start bullshitting on another topic of which you are woefully unprepared to defend.

Those carriers are some of the coolest fucking machines to ever be built. Two construction jobs ago I was working in Norfolk on the Naval Base doing a hanger on the edge of Willoughby Bay. One of our Project Engineers was a former mechanic in the Navy and our Admin's daughter was with PR for a carrier in port (believe it was the Ike). We got a project team tour of the ship and got to walk all around it (no reactor room ). Turns out it was the same ship that our PE was stationed on and when we were up in the bridge he looked at the Captain's chair and the coffee mug holder that he had fab'd and installed at least 5 years ago was still there. No aircraft were on the ship since it was in port but walking on the deck was impressive. It's pretty damn big but after 6 months I can see how it would get really fucking small.

One of the friends I referenced in FBB's thread just recently got stationed in Norfolk and will be flying Super Hornets off one of the carriers, don't know which one though. Another couple of friends are officers on DDGs. Got a cool tour of one of those (USS McFaul) and it was pretty impressive as well.

not exactly true. they don't "arrest" you. they will hold you until the correct police/federal agency show up who then arrest you.

They offer public tours of active duty carriers from time to time around here. A guy I work with has done them a couple times.

I've been on the Midway which is right near downtown on the other side of the harbor from the active duty carriers. It is really freaking cool.
