I think this is the best looking card I've ever seen. Clean lines, no "bits" sticking or hanging out. Nice trim parts.

And the logo lights up to give you a nice case glow.

Actually, I feel they got the concept spot on.

As we know, the Devil is in the details, and this card's look has more visual details outside than stream processors inside.

Also from the evil molding creases we can assume it was trying to have demonic insect sex with itself, but got a sore back just when it was popped out of the molding machine.

And better yet, this is the factory oc card you get to play with in hell. So, that's not so bad.

Except, in hell, that's all you get. No other system components. Never mind stable drivers. Just the card to play with. To stare at. Forever. Why?

Because, hell hath no Fury...

I've got to agree, that's a beautiful looking card.

I still don't understand why it's so noisy. You'd think the hybrid approach would lower the noise, but instead this card ranks very high for noise based on the earlier post above showing the noise chart. Could it be that the single fan somehow becomes super-noisy and loud, even though it's just cooling VRMs? Or maybe the hybrid water pump is super noisy? I have no idea, just don't understand why the card isn't quieter.

That looks to be set up for failure...it isn't a blower, so where is the hot air meant to go? And insulating a heatsink like that, when you're not venting the hot air, just seems silly.

Sure, it looks nice...

Per TechReport. So, not an AMD biased site.

You should click that link. XFX made a 290x with a blower...and they don't say which XFX card that is, unless I missed it. There is this though:

http://images.hardwarecanucks.com/image//skymtl/GPU/R9-290X-XFX/R9-290X-XFX-48.jpg

XFX’s Double Dissipation heatsink and its GHOST thermal technology has come under its fair share of criticism in the past few years for high VRM and core temperatures. However, in this iteration, XFX has addressed these issues with what’s called their “GHOST 2” design which increases airflow towards critical components, upsizes heatpipe size and adds extensive VRM cooling. All of this was accomplished without upping the acoustical footprint over previous generations.

So, two things:

1. The card does have some venting hidden in the photos you posted.
2. While it maintains decent temps, it does so at the cost of noise, and that style of cooler apparently is not known for being that good either. I care less about looks than I do noise & temps. I like low temps, low noise. It's why I chose a MSI 980 (and had I gotten a 980ti, it would have been the MSI, whenever it came in stock. The ACX coolers, while OK, seem to get a bit noisy at higher speeds - I never hear my MSI.)

The first thing that struck me about that fan placement, is how it is tilted in a way to draw in air from behind it, which is good, but I don't understand why they made it 3 slots when it is a hybrid cooler.

Maybe you need to click the link. I obviously did because I posted it.

XFX R9 290X Double Dissipation
Let's be frank: depending on how you look at it, you either have to give XFX some credit or some grief for naming its graphics cards "DD edition." Because breasts. That's clearly the imagery the name is meant evoke, and the twin fans on this cooler certainly are large and full. Ample, one might even say. And you know, there's very little that a lonely male gamer likes more than a really large pair of... fans.

Well, then their results fly in the face of the Hardware Canucks review. By 13.5db for the XFX card (in excess of DOUBLE the volume). But hey, ignore the content I posted.

Edit:
HardOCP seems to concur:
XFX's Double Dissipation cooler does an average job at keeping the GPU cool while overclocking. However, it was required that we had to take the fans to 100% to get our stable overclock of 1130MHz. Thankfully the fans are quiet, but we do feel these are underpowered and provide less air flow compared to the fans on the ASUS R9 290X DC2 OC DirectCU II cooler. On the flip side, we think the copper heatplate and copper pipes provide a superior heatsink.

I suspect it isn't that the fans are weak; I suspect it's resistance to airflow. A simple test would be removing the shroud and seeing how it does.

You said it wasn't the card in TR's review and insinuated I hadn't even read the link I posted. You were wrong. Period. Get over it and stop posting something else like it matters more. I don't know what to tell you if you believe that benches from different sites can be compared.

TR doesn't give the distance to the mic, but it was likely more than 12" which is what HC measures. They are also playing a game not running a canned benchmark which the bios can be tweaked for. So is completely unreliable.

You simply looked at the cooler and made your conclusion it wouldn't cool well. Well, even your HC bench shows that it does.

The whole conversation was about how ugly the new Powercolor is. If you don't care about how it looks then why even comment? Especially considering your "performance review" was based on... (wait for it) how it looked.

I'll wait for you to get the last word in, because I merely posted a pic of a card I considered an attractive design which was part of the ongoing discussion at the time. There's really nothing to debate here and no point except you don't like it because it doesn't look like it cools well. Carry on.
