PowerColor ATI Radeon X1650 PRO with ASUS A8V DELUXE MOBO

hello

I have the asus a8v deluxe socket 939 motherboard and my graphics card recently stopped working so i bought the
powercolor ati radeon x1650 pro 512mb GDDR2 128-bit graphics card AGP 8x/4x
after installing the drivers from the powercolor website windows xp stopped loading after the first screen, everything just freezes...the same thing keeps happening after i rebooting

i tried re-installing windows since that seemed to be the only solution possible....after that i installed the drivers from the ati website and the same exact thing happens

now i am at a loss....i don't know why it's not working, any help would be appreciated

dont install the 9.4 drivers for Direct X 10, go to 9.3, they support Direct X 9.

what exactly are u talking about...what is 9.4 and 9.3....i haven't installed any directX i said i did a fresh install of windows and it still didn't work

those are the ATI drivers 9.4 for DirectX 10, I m still using a socket 939 and ATI 1950pro my mobo is VIA too, dont d/w the latest drivers. I hope you fix it.

so do i have to install directX 9 after i reinstall windows xp? and then after that install the 9.3 ati x1950 pro drivers? what is VIA too?? this is not the same as my ASUS a8v deluxe

also i have checked and the ATI website has 9.3 as the the only one available, which means i already tried 9.3 and it didn't work.....this sucks

What he meant is, CAT 9.4 and later does not support DX9.0 CARDS, only DX10 cards. CAT 9.3 and earlier is require for DX9.0 cards, such as X1650.

In addition, you probably need to use the Catalyst AGP Hotfix package, not the standard release. ATI/AMD's own linkage to the AGP hotfix release only offers the latest CAT 9.4, which does not support DX9.0 cards. Here are links to CAT 9.2 and 9.3 AGP hotfix versions (try 9.3 first):

what is CAT? the link u gave these are the drivers for the x1650 or i have to install this first then the 9.3 drivers?....i just reinstalled windows and followed the exact directions from the ati website with 9.3 and net framework and directx9c and it still freezes and restarts every time

CAT = Catalyst (ATI's name for its driver package)

The drivers I linked to are known as the AGP Hotfix version. The AGP Hotfix drivers are released separately by ATI to address certain issues with AGP cards, since the focus of ATI's regular driver releases has been on PCI Express for a while now. You install them instead of the regular ATI Catalyst drivers. e.g.

1. OS with service packs/updates
2. NET Framework 1.1 ~ 2.0
3. Latest DirectX redist (NOV 2008 will do)
4. AGP Hotfix drivers

If you don't want to do all that over, just uninstall all current ATI drivers, restart when prompted, then install the AGP Hotfix release that I linked.

i can't, windows instantly either freezes up or restarts as soon as it boots i cant do anything....damn but i just realized if i booted it in safe mode i would have been able to uninstall right?? also...if the card i ordered is AGP and i went to the website and found the card u are saying the drivers they give there aren't compatible that's just terrible....well i am already in the early middle of re-installing windows i will update instantly after all this is done...it's gonna be like this
1. windows xp pro with SP2 and directX9.0c included
2. net framework 2.0
3. your hotfix package link 9.3

DAMN....i was almost excited, it looked like it was really gonna work this time....the installition just looked so right....but it still doesn't work the same thing happens....either freezes or reboots....i guess i am now sadly trying the last resort of hotfix 9.2 with lots of doubt in it working

OMFG....IT WORKS, 9.2 WORKS....you my friend are the f*kin best, i was already planning to send back the video card tomorrow.....i bow in the presence of greatness!!!....the only problem so far is that firefox is running badly, when i open it the scrolling is choppy and after a few web pages the computer freezes and the screen goes black, it's a problem that i might run into with other problems but i dunno...i have never had problems with firefox before that....any ideas? but otherwise it's a small price to pay for a working graphics card since internet explorer is working perfectly fine

You could always try a slightly older version:

just also tried hotfix 8.4, which also worked with the graphics card but the same exact problem with firefox....as soon as i use firefox the system blacks out and restarts...it's just bizarre i love firefox but i guess now i will have to starting using internet explorer....and going back to hotfix 9.2

so yeah it appears i spoke too soon....now not even 8.4 works....not even 9.2....they appear to work at first but once u start using the computer it just goes black and has to be rebooted...a big sigh as it appear i have to return the card and order something much older which is already proven to work?

another update, even though nobody seems to care....i switched my motherboard settings in the bios from AGP 8x to AGP 4x and installed hotfix 9.3.....now everything seems to be working ok for now, even firefox......but i am keeping my fingers crossed

If you have a Via chipset, you can set AGP speeds to 8x, but you must disable Fast Writes and AGP 3.0 calibration, otherwise it will give you issues.

Fast Writes and AGP3.0 calibration are not necessarily deal breakers for ATI cards on VIA chipsets. I have a KT600 mainboard that works fine with Fast Writes and AGP3.0 calibration using a few different ATI AGP 8x cards, including the notorious Radeon 9600 that was supposed to give VIA chipsets fits with Fast Writes enabled.

Run DXDIAG, select the Display Tab and look under DirectX Features. Direct3D and AGP Texture Acceleration should be enabled.

Open Device Manager and expand the System Devices category. Locate the entry for VIA CPU to AGP Controller and double click. Click on the Driver Tab, then click Driver Details as shown here:

In the Driver Details window, you should see two driver files listed. The first will be PCI.sys, but what is the second filename listed below it?

Also, what BIOS version does the A8V Deluxe have?

Lastly, the AGP aperture setting in BIOS should be no more than 256MB, preferrably 128MB. The A8V Deluxe is known to have some funny business with large AGP aperture sizes.

My father in law PC has a Via P4M800 chipset with a Radeon X1950GT and it would give him issues when AGP 3.0 calibration was turned on along with Fast Writes.

well i dunno u guys are the experts but after i changed the AGP speed from 8x to 4x in the BIOS and installed hotfix 9.3 everything is now working perfect....so it appears besides not knowing about the hotfix, the main problem was the AGP speed for some reason.....anyhow, thank u so much for your help hopefully this help the many others having the same problems

Thank you so much! I have the exact same motherboard , just tried installing the exact same graphics card and was encountering the same issues!
I have no idea what the chances are of finding a thread that is so specific to my problem but here we are. Thank god for the internet!
I Installed the 9.3 hotfix, disabled fast writes and agp 3 calibration as well as turning the agp speed from 8x to 4x and it worked!
