This comes up as $19.95 but special code "AFFPD7" at checkout gets you the $10.77

Although I have not tried it, "Vista Compatibility" is claimed.

I have used PowerDesk for many years and it remains one of my most used utilities and a favorite from the period of time in which it was called Myjenics[sic].
Can't remember how it was spelled.
The guy was a genius in Boulder, CO who popped out this Swiss Army Knife of a utility in the early days of windows...so I'm guessing that he built it in about '95.

Since then, it's been sold at least three times and no version beyond 5 was worth a darn. Apparently, the programmer did not come over to the new owners along with the program.
He was Serbian or Checz or Armenian.
I believe he escaped Kosovo as a result of the war and immigrated to the U.S.A.

The reason for all of this superfluous bs is that if you can elaborate on this info, I'd appreciate it. In the early days, he'd answer his own phone, talk sales, tech support, - you know, the one man office.

As a side note, along the way, he built a couple of other utilities that were valuable until he was no longer there to update the code and a new version of Windows came along and broke the programming.
BTW,
PowerDesk Pro 7 contains, among others,

About the slickest FTP client I have ever seen. Came out with v.5, I think.
The File Sync isn't bad, either. I've recently seen File Syncers - standalone - that were priced at $20-$40.00

There is a trial v.6 that, as I've said, "Never used it."

Thanks for the lead. I was just about to order it for "full price" of 19.99. Always glad to save a 10-spot! I don't expect any really dramatic changes, and I don't do Vista but...

I have used PD since V.1 for W95, and even before that when it was called WizManager for W3.1! This program, along with QuickView Plus, is a must-have on my computers.

The history as I remember it...Mike Kronenberg (sp?) founded Mijenix with another guy named Brett (Can't recall the last name.) and wrote WizManager. When they migrated to W95 they sold a stripped down version of WizManager to MS as the core of Windows Explorer. The enhanced version became Explorer Plus for W95. After a while MS became annoyed and made them change the name to PD. They also developed several other utilities including Fix It/System Suite. When they were bought by Ontrack everyone went over, and things continued as before. I helped beta test several programs for them. Ontrack sold off the utilities to a couple of companies. PD along with FixIt/SS and a couple of other were bought by V-Com (now Avanquest). Kronenberg went with V-Com for a while.

Then he got into the security end of the business. He left V-Com and bought back the rights to PD and formed a company called Novatix. They released a version called ExplorerPlus 6.2. It had a few nice bells and whistles not found in PD, but is buggy. He also developed the first of his Zero-day security products called RedWall, which I also beta'd. He has since gone on to develop advanced security software and was bought out by PC Tools. His product, now called ThreatFire, is sold by them. (He now works for PC Tools out of his Boulder, CO. office.)

Interesting. I've used PD for many years and don't know how folks get by without something like it. No problems with version 6 here though I do recall hesitating upon first switching from 5.

I've used PD for years, too. Before that Norton Navigator and before that XTree Gold. I couldn't live without these replacements for Windows Explorer. I ususally keep a copy on a thumb drive since I frequently help people migrate from one PC to another. First thing I do is add PD so I see what they need to move.

I was very disappointed that PD 6 direct really work with Vista (made building my son's machine a real pain) and it has not been that stable with XP, either, IMHO.

Glad to see they finally came out with an updated version. I was very afraid that it had reached the end of the line.

Really nice for a first post...Thanks for the update.
BTW, for all...
The File Sync is still rather feeble like it was in v.5 & earlier
However, the FTP Client should still be the best of the best as long as it remains "unimproved" from v.5.

Not to start a flame with the opposition...
But real men will wait until they are forced to Linux or, Use XP Pro 'till M$ pries it out of my cold dead hands...
M$ just extended their "limited" support of XP to:
Main$tream technical support will be available only until April 2009.
Extended support --for pay support and security fixes-- goes until April 2014.

Code AFFPD7 does not work today .

That code removes the upgrade discount of $20.00 and only gives a $10.00 discount.

One of the things that aggravates me with V-Com/Avanquest is that they do not offer multi-licenses (yes, for SystemSuite and FixIt they did wise up and go to 3-user) for all their products. For those of us who try to stay within the EULAs, how about a break?

I use PowerDesk since the very first still buggy release in 1993/4 split year..

The time was going-up and after a dozens of updates and new orders I finally hit the release ver 5.0 and then got stock with from years (no any Updates).

I runs the windows XP and the PowerDesk doesn't like much this O/S and often cause Error and usually system freeze.

After a long working time byself with the Registry I setup the PowerDesk Star from Registry Only not from the "Startup" directory under the 'Accessories'.

This setup speedup the Bootup as well as the Shoot down system (no more such long delays).

I got year ago the ver 6.0 but I don't like that!

Under ver 6.0 the PowerDesk Bar is missing and only Explorer works and I badly depend on so I quit with.

Two days ago on other big forum there was some talk about the PowerDesk Pro and I just make some entry.

In respond today I got a Guy asking for the ver 7.0 or so if I having any chance to find that.

Unfortunately I never have any idea that there is 7.0 release so using Google I finally hit the "PowerDesk Pro 7" Site with cool surprice..

Since that I was ready to go with the "Code AFFPD7" and trying to setup Order but the Code it does not works as posted..

It will use the Code the USD$39.99 as -$10 = $29.99 as final which is too much for my pocket!

Now I'm the niewbie Member on this cool Board with Hope to get better Idea or Tips to hit the destination for the "PowerDesk Pro" I'm badly addicted!

Thanks in advance!

I have also used PowerDesk Pro for years. I think they finally got v.6 working right with the several updates as I was using that without incident up to when I removed it and put v. 7 on this week. Unfortunately I paid $20. for it, but since I use it every day it was worth it. And I agree that the FTP is super slick as it treats your FTP sites just like any other folder. The archive (Zip, RaR, etc.) handler is decent too and it treats those just like folders too.

I'm about to list an offer from Avanquest for 50% off everything on their new store site - once I've got it posted, I'll come back here and add a link to it:
http://web.avanquest.com/ML/20...S/16/New_Shop_0408.htm

And File Sync worked pretty well for me in v.6. I haven't tried it in v.7 yet.

Oh dear, I only see PD v6 in the "New Avanqvest" site.
I'll bet v7 belongs to some one else.

Nope Power Desk v.7 Pro is still VCom/Avanquest. From the home page of the new site, click on the "See All" button on the "New Products" panel and voila there is PD7P... I'm wondering if PD7P was the one you were supposed to get for $11. as the 'Hot Upgrade Deal" I received was 19.95 + tax... Maybe it was a special code for very recent purchasers of PD6P.

The AFFPD7 code doesn't work for me either, but that's OK as I don't need another copy anyway - it's well worth the $20 and change I paid to upgrade. The new thumbnail view is great for my photo folders.

You can download a copy of the standard edition of v.6 to try for free (unfortunately it does have a nag screen to upgrade to the Pro version). It just lacks some of the advanced features like the FTP and doesn't handle as many archive types and I think the file viewer has limited formats as well (the Pro version can view dozens of file types without needing the creating app. present). One other thing, it uses the American instead of Brit spellings of words (i.e. color instead of colour, etc.). Lacks Vista compatibility as well.

I hadn't heard of Opus9 before - thanks for bringing it up. Since I'm so used to PDP, I probably won't change, but one never knows. I suppose I could put up with the Britishisms if it's a lot better.

System Mechanic was pretty hot back in the early days of XP, also.
Turned XP Alpha/Beta (released as v1.0) into a real v1.0

I was pleased to stumble on this thread on PDPro. I have used it since the days of Xtree on occasion, but the most important (priceless) feature I use almost daily is one of its sub-apps called PDFind.exe.

This is the only Explorer replacement applet that I know about which allows me to manage folders in XP and Windows Home Server with 300,000 .mp3 tunes--Windows Explorer is not up to such a task, at least with the existing ram and cpu combinations in my desktops and server.

I was happy when version 7 was released sin it would work on winXP x64, but disappointed when I started getting crashes and one particular bug. In the earlier versions, you could select an archive and then when viewing the contents, click on a file and press F9 to view the file. Great for reading readme files or finding images in an archive. But in version 7, Powerdesk locks up. Not only that, if you happen to have the view option active and accidentally click on an archive, it locks up.

I wrote a couple letters to support and got back a "it really shouldn't work and was just a unsupported feature in version 6." That got me a bit upset since I know this "feature" worked in several earlier versions and I'm pretty sure it was advertised as such, though I have no way of proving it. When I asked why the program locked up instead of simply ignoring a archive file view attempt, I got no response.

I really don't think this program is being developed anymore so I would be careful if you expect future support. It's really too bad since it's a great program.
