The SCSI controller is built into the motherboard. You don't get a separate SCSI controller card.

Check out the specs of the system here.

Not that this isn't a bad deal (It's really REALLY awesome deal), but What would you need a machine like this for? I have a dually PIII 1.0ghz box and it does everything i want it to do (web server, ftp, mail, file server, mp3 server, etc) and it has plenty of power to spare...

You could encode divx... keep movies on it & play 'em on other machines in your house... SQL database...

Or you could wrap in in aluminum foil and put some blinking LED's on it and pretend it's a robot.

What config did you get? I ordered mine around noon yesterday and it's still being built. Oh well.

I suspect that this is the 400MHz FSB model... The max CPU is 2.8GHz, which is the max of the 400MHz FSB Xeons. If this is the case, as I suspect it is, the other deal w/ the 600SC single cpu is probably a better deal. Those are 533MHz FSB.

Sadly, Single Xeons really don't offer much more than a P4 in a single CPU configuration. It used to be that you could get P3 Xeons with 1 or 2MB of L2 cache... nowadays the Xeons have the same cache as the P4s, making them mostly worthless unless you actually intend to use them in a dual setup.

SEBZX79: I believe so on all 512k cache Prestonias.

Anyone buying a 600SC want to get that $150 ATA Raid (CERC 4 channel) card and sell it to me? PM me. Thanks.

1) with only a 8mb ATI video card (non-upgradeable) you probably couldn't use this system as a server for multiplayer LAN games... I bet a lot of games wouldn't even run with only 8mb of video RAM. The game would give you an error message...
When you run a dedicated server, the server is not actually using the game engine. It's just running a text console that records all the events. Try running one on your computer.

3) What about the possibility of upgrading the MOBO to one with an AGP slot?
How easy would it be to move the SCSI to another MOBO? etc.
Next to nothing. Xeons are server CPUs, and servers do not use AGP.

You can't move the SCSI controller, it's built into the motherboard.

If you really want a Xeon motherboard with AGP support, here's one.

I just checked the Dell software and peripherals section and the only 73GB 10K U320 deive they have is a Seagate Cheetah 10.6. Those drives alone are around $400 each. It would be worth it just to break the system apart and sell it. How the hell is Dell making any money on this deal???!!!!

I feel sorry for other computer retailers like Gateway. With Dell selling machines at these prices, they don't stand a chance.

Great deal.

I think I'm going to sell my 1400sc. And someday (almost a year later) I might get my $250 rebate from the 1400. Between that rebate and selling the 1400sc and the Xeon CPU, I should be able to cover the price of the new 1600sc and a pair of Xeons!

Thanks for posting!

If I didn't already have six damned PCs in this house I'd be all over this.

Don't forget about eBates - might alleviate some of the tax cost.
