Solaris on Intel has a very limited hardware compatibility list. If you want to put Solaris on the 1600SC, I think the first thing you have to do is make sure Solaris has drivers for all the components:

Solaris 8 Supported Devices

Devices supported by verified third-party drivers

Looking around for a decent pci card you can get this, just search for: ati 7000

Thoughts?

You're always going to pay more for Registered ECC RAM. I ordered a stick of Samsung from here. I've had pretty good service from them in the past, and they're geographically close, so shipping is quick.

EDIT: Dell's website also confirms the type of RAM:
1600SC
600SC

CAREFUL : Your link refers to PC133 SDRAM the SC 600 and 1600 require PC2100 DDR SDRAM - BIG DIFFERENCE - look on pricewatch for other reasonalble offer by doing a search for "512MB DDR ECC registered"

Dell's own memory upgrade kit for 512MB upgrade kit had "Logical Type: 64x72".

So I would add the words "PC2100" and "64x72" unless any combination is fine.

"512MB PC2100 DDR ECC registered 64x72"

Placed an order for this badboy but was wondering a few things. I have a friend with a Prestonia Xeon 2.4 lying around, if I put that into this puppy, will it automatically lower its multiplier to match the 2.0 or would it just not work all together? Also, is the mainboard an ATX form factor board or some weird Dell OEM design? Do these 2.0 Xeons have HT?

Processors on these servers usually have to match not only speed and layout (e.g. amount of cache) but also stepping. Multipliers on Intel chips are generally locked.

Xeon's are not multiplier locked, the multiplier can be lowered (not raised) from standard. You can run a 2.4 and 2.0 Prestonia together at 20x IF the serverworks bios supports it. I believe the bios on most P4 Xeon motherboards have a way to adjust the multiplier.

Wow I did not know that - interesting.

Still isn't the prestonia only equipped with 256kB cache - that would be problem.
Also since the 2.4 is 533(i.e. 133 fsb) - it would have a max multiplier of 18 right???

cheapest I can find for a xeon 2.0ghz 512mb cache is $191 @ pricewatch.

Any opinions on this being a dedicated avid express or premiere editing machine?

I have never had 2 mismatched CPU's in a server work! Screen never comes on and machine doesn't even boot up. Did not try this on the 1600sc though. All were Dells.

OH & why would anyone want to put Solaris on Intel? I would say Solaris is optimized for Sun processors and very limited compatibility & stuff. I would go w/ Suse, RedHat, or BSD.

All right, I give up! I caved in and got one. Needed a good all around server since my old one died. After all the coupon codes, rebates, $250 instant off, free shipping, etc. I stepped up to one with the RAID and the hot swap SCSI drives. Also for 50$ more I got the 3 year parts warantee since I plan on keeping this machine for a lot longer than 1 year.

Ordered on Fri 2/21. Dell's web site showed no progress on the machine over the weekend. This morning it now shows its built and in testing. Wonder how long they test and/or burn these systems in before packaging them up...

I like everyone selling the HD's on ebay, no bids at all on anyone selling their drives out of these.

Even one guy trying to sell his HD's before he even got the computer, telling it will be in by the time the auction ends so bid now. And they are worth $450.

Looks like this deal just cooled down - on the SC600 they do not take off $100 anymore and as reported on the SC1600 it's now only $100 not 250 anymore - dang

I'm looking this one over carefully as well. The drives alone are worth more than the whole box. :Q

What are the odds of getting a matching stepping CPU from Newegg?

This deal is smokin' hot.
