i wanted to build a nice AMD 64 3000+ rig when i bought my laptop, but now i think i need to sink for this machine!!!

any advice here? which should i go with?

P4 2.4 GHz 800 MHz FSB
256 MB ECC RAM (using promotion)
C1, Motherboard IDE, Ascending Order, 1 Hard drive
Palm Zire (i plan to eBay it)

$598 - $150 - $100 = $350 shipped

also, how would an ATI 9800 go wit hthis? i plan to use this as a development/gaming rig

at this rate you could buy two of them (may be one with RAID) and combine memory and harddives for a great Raid server with 512MB

Can you build one for that price with a quality motherboard like Dell uses?

I have been purchasing them for servers the last couple of years, because I can not build a the type of Intel Server for less. The build quality of these servers are excellent, the case has room for HD's I am running Raid 5 on one of mine with an IDE of top of that.

When they get that cheap, I just can't pass up on the deal..

nah, i was talking about the guy's raid configuration, but on second thought it is a better deal to do it through dell because you have the skeleton system left over

rasputin, how would this make for a workstation used for game development/gaming vs an AMD 64-bit setup?

i like this just because of the price!

Yeah, I did price out the parts.... I couldn't even come close. I got 2 systems 2.4GHZ HT 800Mhz FSB for 329.00 a pop shipped....

You have to price out Intel board 875P that has SATA and 1 Gig Internet connections. I figure a board like this is going to run you around 135-145 bucks.
Proc is going to be around 170.00
You will have to buy a CPU Fan.... Depends if you want to over clock the sky is the limit... 40 bucks for a decent one
You'll need a good Power Supply and Case esp if you plan on over clocking. 80-120
40 Gig Hard Drive, CD ROM and A floppy Drive... adds about another 80.00 or so...

Freebees with a Dell, PCI ATI Rage II card, You'll have to update that to an ATI 9700 PRO or 9800 Pro 300-400 bucks gonna spend that anyway....
Freebees RAM 1 stick of 128... You can sell it on ebay for 20-30 bucks... Whatever... Buy a couple of 256 Meg Sticks from Crucial 3200 DDR 80.00
Freebees Keyboard and Mouse....

Dell Gives you free shipping... I figure your gonna buy a lot of those parts from different venders to get the best deal so shipping will cost from 35-45 bucks...

Now you got to put assemble all your stuff once you get it all out of the boxes and PREY it all works once you waste half a day getting all the wires and zip ties looking nice & and you have to read the book on why your ram isn't posting right or your chip isn't booting up at the right speed not to mention figure out why the hard drive isn't being recognized by the BIOS. With dell it's already pre configured and they test it before they ship it out to you...

Advantages to Dell? You get a really nice QUIET machine... You don't have to really turn any screws... It's the Lazy way to go... Even installing windows is really easy...

Advantages to building it yourself? You can custom pick all your parts like heavy duty power supplies... Fancy cases/different colors...etc. You can Tweak the BIOS and OVERCLOCK!!! The only reason to build it yourself to push the system to it's limits. And that means IT's GONNA be LOUD!!! The further you over clock the more heat and the more fans you will need. So... It will be a bit faster but... I really hate FAN noise. I've had enough of it...

Disadvantages of DELL ... You get one Big BLACK UGLY box that says DELL all over it... And people think you are retarded that you can't build your own computer for yourself... Sigh... No Wow factor when your friends come over... No windows or tweaking the BIOS into pushing the CPU and RAM... Sigh... But who really wants too? I guess you can fry your chip and lock your system up... Those days are over for me. The only other bad part is that you got to talk to someone that can't speak english when you need a new part... Dell CS is lacking but oh well, it almost beats trying to RMA some part you bought yourself since dell ships out the new part you don't have to pay shipping on sending the old one back providing it's still under warranty.

#1 one reason to buy 4 or 5 of these things? You can run your fav DC project like Seti or Folding at home. With Hyper Threading and an 800 Mhz Bus with DDR RAM you can really crunch data fast!!! And do it very cheaply! So go ahead and buy 6 or 10 of these and join Anadtech SETI Team ... You'll have over 10,000 WU's in no time! It won't even sound like a server room either!!!

Back to the subject after I got done pricing out CPU/MOBO/HeatSync Fan/Shipping <--- Just those alone almost came out to what one will spend for a new Dell System...

i'm really interested in this setup, but then you started talking about ht. i don't think another $50 for the 2.4 is worth it. would it be better to sell the 2.26 then find a cheap 2.4 on ebay or here, since they're everywhere?

also, with having the free gift + ram + $100 rebate, how come an error doesn't show up? the fine print says one or the other, but would they call me to let me know, or would they be asses & ship the ram & erase all tracks of a rebate?

Yep, Dell changed their site as quoted before by will792. However, you can still add both the double memory and the rebate to your cart, and it will appear on your order. Usually if two options are incompatible the order page will not let you proceed.

I ordered mine yesterday (and it already shipped!) and my order clearly shows the double memory and the rebate. I hope that they honor the rebate. Even if they don't honor the rebate this is still a good deal since the Palm and the extra memory are easily worth the extra $100 for this system.

If Mail in rebate was listed on packing slip, Dell will honor it.

they were updating their systems. for a moment there, only a $100 discount was applied before the rebate. seems to be back to $150 for now.

so can anyone answer my question? is it worth the extra $50 for the 2.4, or would it be better to sell the 2.26 & buy a 2.4 somewhere else?

Folks over at FW have ben saying that it MAY be possible to get the free ram upgrade AND get the rebate as the shipping bill you send in for the rebate does NOT say anything about a FREE UPGRADE. And this listing of the 400sc does not say you can't have both. Except for the fine print.

BUT>>>

You, in reality, may not get the rebate if Dell figures it out.

Its a 50/50 call.

ehh, i'm not biting. $50 more for a slightly better cpu; close to another $50 for tax; it's giving me a hard time at checkout(fluxing between $100 & $150 discounts). It also doesn't say anything about the rebate on the checkout page.

i might as well buy this thing from the guy on ebay trying to make a buck off them. comes out to a little less. i'll probably just wait a couple months more, like i always do.

to me the $50 for the processor upgrade is well worth it. I get a full p4 system at a really cheap price. Not sure about everyone else, but when I was running a celeron or a duron that I wasn't getting the full processing power. For what it is worth, you could sell the Celeron later and pick up a P4 2.4 for around the same cost of the upgrade (that is if you can sell it for around $45 cleared and you go with the cheapest provider on pricewatch). Not sure if that would void the warrenty though.

yes, a p4 over a celeron is a clear cut decision, but i was talking about going from the 2.26p4 to the 2.4p4.

ohhh, my bad.

Also, Dell has dropped the $150 instant savings to $100 and deleted my saved cart. I guess I will wait until they have the free processor upgrade.

If I called and complained that they deleted my saved order would it do any good? I had free shipping (up to $19 at least) and the $150 instant and $100 MIR. Would have been a good deal, but now, not so hot to me.
