Powers On then Off repeatedly

This is my first build so please bear with me:

The problem is that when I hit the power switch the computer will start for like 2 seconds then power off, then on again, then off, then on, then off, etc... All fans spin, and the hd and power leds came on then it just shutsdown, then it tries starting up again, repeatedly.

I was also having a problem with a high pitched whine from the computer. This was remedied by plugging in the extra power cable to the card. Is there perhaps something else not plugged in right or something?

I have a e6600, evga 8800gts, 2gb ram, 430watt seasonic s12, 1 500gb hd, 1 case fan, stock heatsink\fan, 1 optical drive...

So anyone know whats up with this?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds to me like it's a power supply issue. A high pitch whine usually means it's time for an RMA for the PSU.

I would also venture a guess that 430w might not be enough to run that system.

definately Power supply. I just went through the same thing with a recent build. Replace it, that's it.

OK, thanks. I also unplugged everything except the cpu, and psu. Still the same issue. So would it be a faulty PSU or not enough power to the components? I was pretty damn sure a Seasonic 430watt psu would be enough for this. Also the high pitched whine was only present when the 8800gts was plugged in the slot without the extra power cable. When i plug in that extra cable there is no noise, but still the same power on/off problem.

Could it be an issue with the MB (Gigabyte DS3) or CPU?

Thanks in advance.

It could also be a problem with your case switch.

What you are describing sounds exactly like a power switch contact stuck in the closed position (like you pressed the ON button and left it pressed).

I did a few more tests. I did the power supply paper clip test, the fan kept running everything seemed fine, except when i put my ear to the psu i could hear a very soft clicking sound.

Then i took the psu and mobo out of the case disconnected everything from the mobo except the cpu and heatsink\fan. Plugged in the 24 pin cable into the mobo and then plugged in the 4 pin square like cable to the motherboard. Then i shorted the power jumper, and still ON\OFF behavior, just keeps looping.

So does this rule out the PSU? A potential motherboard\cpu problem?

Thanks in advance.

When you say "shorted the power jumper", do you mean that you momentarily shorted the pins on the MB header with say a screwdriver? OR do you mean that you put a jumper over the two pins and pressed the power button?

If you did the second item, that's the same as holding your finger on the power switch and will give that exact response.

I had a similar problem, I tried everything later found out that the heat sink and fan on the processor were not screwed in right. i fixed that everything works perfect
