... Who makes it? Power PC? It can do dx10.1 (but not dx11), which I thought is an amd trademark of sorts.

Has power PC improved so much that it can now manufacture relatively powerful gpus, or does amd have a hand in this?

Huh? PowerVR is the company. Nothing to do with PowerPC at all. PowerPC is/was CPU.

Imagination Technologies, they make the GPU core for Apple's A4/A5 as well as other mobile devices.

In fact I think the GPU core used in the PS Vita is the quad core version of the GPU core used in the iPad 2.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerVR#Series_5XT

PowerVR SGX543MP2(iPad 2) vs PowerVR SGXMP4+(PS Vita)

PowerPC is not a company, it is an ISA.
DirectX is an API suite owned by Microsoft that (along with OpenGL) nVidia, ATI, etc. design their hardware around.

PowerVR is the GPU division of Imagination Technologies.

They are the ones that created the Kyro line of GPUs that used a different approach called tile based rendering, the fanboys of which claimed that it would eventually come to dominate the GPU market and destroy 3dfx, nVidia, ATI, etc. It fizzled and faded into obscurity.

They did get the contract to make the Dreamcast's GPU, after Sega screwed 3dfx over.

The funniest thing here is the thought that DX11 is a trademark of AMD...

Ya its Funny Best thing to do is the processor number into Google it will take to their page for that product. WIK info is pretty bad . here is an example
This is from Imagination tech
SGX544 also provides comprehensive market proven support for desktop OpenGL 2.1 (including X11 integration with DRI2, EXA and DRM support), OpenGL ES 1.1 & 2.0, OpenVG 1.1 and OpenCL 1.1 Embedded Profile, offering the widest ranges of supported APIs of any mobile or embedded graphics IP core available today. POWERVR SGX software stacks have passed rigorous Khronos and Microsoft conformance tests, guaranteeing fast time to market with high confidence across the widest range of embedded and desktop operating systems. Software configurations for Linux, Android, MeeGo, Palm's WebOS, Nokia's Maemo, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Samsung's Bada Nucleus, and a variety of other RTOS are all shipping with POWERVR SGX powered devices today.

Yes but that deceptive as it does opencl 1.1 As not alot of these tiny gpus do MS OS

well, they are in a lot of embedded systems and i think intel is using their designs for their gpus now

Thats correct thats why Intel is allowed by imagination to mod their tech so intel can use it in the notebooks and desktops . I don't think others are allowed this exemption.

They have pretty much stayed in the arm market but expanding out now just as arm is . The point is even tho its NOT DX11 it has open cl 1.1

If I were making a console, I'd use an custom ARM CPU and a customized PowerVR chipset. Nintendo should've used a customized powerVR for the WiiU.

Using a quad core ARM A-9 would have been a significant drop from an IBM PPC CPU. The quad core and higher A15s aren't ready yet, and it would have delayed the Wii-U at least one full year.

Nintendo is using the lull from the big hardware guys to get an advantage, so it is time sensitive that they got the Wii-U out now.

Now that both the Wii U and PSV are announed i am more looking forward to what will power PS4 and Xbox(3).

Anyone think they are going to have DX11 capabilities?

They might be DX12 ready.

Both companies have stated that their new consoles are 2-3 years out.

We will be well into Windows 8 and the future iterations of DirectX by then.

The quad core A15 will be out soon IIRC.

I've read that some are sampling, but not shipping yet.

There are a few months of lead time when they actually start shipping until you actually see devices.

There are quad A9s on the way like the Tegra3 relatively soon though (end of the year).

Now if only Intel's graphics driver team could make full use of the hardware. That first PowerVR Atom had terrible support, I believe the excuse given was restrictions on software IP use. Not sure if that's the real reason or smoke for a still rough driver team, I mean the hardware license they negotiated seems in Intel's favor so why the flub on software IP?
