I was in the market for a cheap card reader and so I have found one. I was gonna settle for a cheapo compact flash reader for $7 but luckily I stumbled upon this at Fry's (also available at outpost.com).

$19.99 - $15 rebate from PQI = $4.99 (Requires rebate certificate, copy of receipt, and original UPC)

Good til Sept 9th. Haven't opened it, but hopefully my new toy works without any problems...

Apparently they haven't posted the rebate form at outpost.com yet. I can make a scan if anyone is interested.

Rebate goes to:
PQI FPT-A-US $15 Rebate Offer
46661 Fremont Blvd.,
Fremont, CA 94538

Says it'll take up to 10 weeks to process Here's a review from Toms Hardware

Fremont!? Maybe I can just walk in and ask for my rebate $ right away!

So did you get this in the Bay Area, CA? If not, where?

Got it at the aztec one in San Jose. Seriously, can you walk in there and demand your rebate? Cuz I'll do it!

nice price for a 6 in 1 reader.

Not to thread crap but I had this same one and for some reason it doesn't like my new rig or windows xp because its borked on my new rig. I had it before on my old Xp1900+ rig w/ usb 1.1 only and it worked like a charm, as soon as I changed mobos and CPU's it caused my computer to run real slow and crash once in awhile. Hopefully its just my reader and not the batch from PQI.

If you're running Win2K, make sure you install the driver before you plug it in...otherwise, you'll never get it working without nuking your system and starting over. :| It works better under WinXP...plug it in and a Microsoft-supplied driver sets it up.

(Why are so many USB peripherals like that? You should be able to plug it in and install the driver when the "new hardware detected" box pops up. I've not had this problem with FireWire, CardBus, PC Card, PCI, ISA, parallel, or serial devices, but several USB devices have bitten me this way.)

Other than that, it's fairly decent. It's small enough that I keep it with my notebook, and it's nice having just one device that'll read both SD cards (used by my Palm) and CompactFlash cards (used by my digital camera). At $5, I'm tempted to get another one that I can keep at home or at work.

I just installed an Apacer 7-1 card reader 2 nights ago and was surprised when the instructions really emphasised installing the drivers before hooking up the cables to the motherboard. Did as told and it works fine. USB 2.0 works too, but I wonder if it is really working at 2.0.

I just bought this reader at the Las Vegas Fry's for $15 and with the $15 rebate it's free! I just tested it out and it works awesome. Windows XP just picked it up with no problem. Awesome deal!

Thanks Bot. Sweet deal.

BTW, You may care to take the word "writer" out of the title. I was disappointed when I discovered that it was only a reader.

Scanner doesn't work so here's a picture of it I took with my digi cam (using the powerizer 2000mAh from the other thread) and then transfered to my computer using the card reader...w00t

I have this black see through one shown here along with the white one that is seen on the review site and at outpost.com. I'm not sure if there's any difference between the two but mine is definitely a writer. I just tested it. I don't see a way of telling when the writing process is done so sometimes I pull out the card too early and I get an error. I was thinking new drivers would do the trick but I'm unsure of which one to download. What does the IX and TD extensions mean?

A question to all of you who have bought this: Which UPC code do I send in? There's 2 different ones on the box...

Um, I am pretty sure you can copy files to the cards with this little guy too (right?!), so therefore it is a writer.

I've never heard of any device like this that ONLY read cards and didn't write them, has anyone seen a product like that? I ask because this isn't the first thread i've seen where people mention the whole writing aspect of the thing.

BTW I bought this back in July first week, FAR from frys in bay area. Sent in rebate with all the stuff on time. And after some e-mails, they claim not to have received it. The guy says I can fax him my receipt and he can try to get me a rebate. So it seems a lil shady.
