Noticed this the first time last night in a banner ad. At first I thought it was for a new movie till I noticed the pre-order date.

Think I would have preferred a movie but most of these games have been at least decent.

I'm hoping that they do a good job on this one as the team working on it has supposedly been trying to stay as faithful to Aliens as they can.

A few things that have been done to try and keep this as authentic as possible:

1) The original film has been pulled from the Fox vaults to make sure that the colors match up correctly for the parts that appear both in the game and in the movie, the Nostromo, the colony, etc.

2) The sounds have been matched as closely as possible for the Aliens, the weapons (pulse rifles, etc.) and of course the famous motion detector sounds

3) They've brought on board Syd Mead (Aliens concept artist) to design areas of LV-426 and the Sulaco that were previously not seen in the movie

Now of course this does not guarantee that it will be a good game but at least it sure seems like they're making a serious effort. I like what I've seen so far in the preview trailers shown on YouTube such as the suspense trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgSHqjwFcd8&feature=player_embedded)

I tell ya...as long as the story is decent and the gameplay decent, and it is half as good as the trailer looks, I will be happy.

I really REALLY want this game to be good. But from the previews I've seen it isn't looking all that great. RPS has a preview not long ago and they were far from impressed. They said the aliens didn't pose any threat and you weren't scared of them and the feel was just off. I hope that it changes because I really want to like and get this game.

Been playing for the past couple hours. It's... decent.

I can't really give a valid opinion on how much this will appeal to Aliens fans, because I haven't actually seen the movie (I know, I know). But if I had to guess, they might get a kick out of it. The character dialog and soundtrack are both very "film-like"; reminiscent of something from an big-budget 80's sci-fi action flick (isn't that what Aliens is anyway?).

As a whole though: It's a generic FPS game. It's a linear shooting gallery without much depth. AFAIK, the game is 4 to 5 hours long, compounded by moments of standing around waiting for your AI teammate to break through a door or something. "Guard me while I hack the security system!" "Hold them off while I clear a path!" Way too many times.

The cooperative AI is borderline retarded. Your squadmates are useless, save for the occasional door-opening, or the occasional distracting of enemies so you can go around and flank. They fail to be effective or intimidating in any other way.

The atmosphere is pretty good. Could be even better if the game had proper pacing. The graphics are nothing to rave about. Visually, it looks as good as any half-decent Unreal Engine game. Some nice lighting here and there, but that's it. The audio is decent as well. Not bad, but not great either.

The gunplay feels alright. You earn points in the game, and you "Rank Up" to gain levels and buy upgrades (it's not as silly as it sounds). The game's pretty easy though (even on hard) and I haven't really felt compelled to upgrade any of my weapons yet.

Overall just kind of mediocre. Average quality for a movie-licensed title. Remember the 2010 version of Aliens vs. Predator? This is probably ~5x better. But that's not saying much, given AvP 2010 was a pretty shitty game.

If you're still interested in Aliens: Colonial Marines, and you're patient, I'd easily think you could get it for $5 on a Steam sale by the end of the year.

I was hoping that this would be a great game, too, as I've been an Aliens fan ever since Aliens 2 (the movie).

However, ever viewing reviews like this, i'm disappointed.

And they had 5 YEARS. Oh, well.

What the fuck? That's not a review at all. It's a few clips of gameplay and movie scenes with....."funny" ....subtitles added.

Seriously, LessThanDan's review is about 90 times more informative.

I'm about 2 and a half missions in and I'm rather "meh" at this point.

The pacing is...awful, in my opinion. AvP 1, 2, and 2010, each did a phenomenally better job at building tension as it started you out. Taking several minutes, sometimes a whole level, to show you your first Xeno. Building tension with weird noises, static, the environment, etc.

ACM almost literally THROWS you into your first fight within 5 minutes or less, with very little cinematic or story consequence; just "[Player Character]! Quick, get through that door and help out so and so! Hurry Marine!" (10 Xenos attack between you and so and so)

Is it a huge deal? No, not really. But as fans of the film(s), what made Aliens so fantastic was that crushing feeling of tension and anticipation. This lacks ALL of that. All of it.

The gameplay is neither terrible no groundbreaking. Graphics are good, sound is stellar (Pulse Rifle actually sounds like it does it 95% of the film now, rather than that one scene of Hudson shooting out the glass that the past 3 AvP games have sampled it from.)

I haven't played it multiplayer yet, but it's pretty clear this is a co-op driven game. Hopefully that redeems it. At this point, and I'm not far in yet at all, it's less than impressive. It's a perfectly competent shooter, and it captures the general atmosphere of the films visually perfectly, but the ambiance, and the tension, which is what makes them such titans in the sci-fi horror genre nearly 30 years later, is almost completely missing.

That's disappointing.

As I've gotten further into it, my opinion has become a bit softer. Without spoiling anything - there are at least a couple of interesting levels that stray beyond the usual run-and-gun nature of the game.

Not that running and gunning is a bad thing to begin with, either. The fact that I'm still sitting here playing it means it can't be that bad. I'm enjoying it, albeit in a mild, lukewarm kind of way.

Edit: And the team AI isn't as terrible as I made it out to be. I've seen my squadmates actually kill a few xenos on their own now. Shocking.

However, ever viewing reviews like this, i'm disappointed.

1) That video doesn't even remotely resemble a coherent "review"

2) It seems like that person really didn't want to like the game.

5 years ago: Hey, lets make a Call of Duty in space and throw in the Alien's license for easy brand association. We'll be rich!

Glad I resisted the urge to Preorder, every review I´ve seen so far is has been extremely bad, don´t know if I´ve ever seen so consistently sh*tty reviews for such a big title at launch.

I really wanted this to be Borderlands 2 but with Aliens IP. Good thing I didn't pre-order. Maybe pick it up if it hits $5 on sale.

I am disappoint. I almost pre-ordered this against my near-universal rule of never preordering anything.

I really, really want an epic singleplayer Aliens game.

Dan, are you saying the game is only 4 to 5 hours long?

That's just what I heard. I'm not sure that's even accurate; someone else on Reddit said that it's more like ~7 hours long. (Which is more reasonable)

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/12/aliens-colonial-marines-pc-review

5.0/10 from IGN
4.5/10 for the Console versions

I'm glad I waited. I'm also completely pissed that one of the few, if not the main, Co-op PC title this year is complete crap.

It's especially telling that it got a 5/10 from IGN, who usually gives out 8's and 9's like a serial killer hands out razor blades at a halloween party.

The reviews are mostly spot-on; except for where they say the game is "extremely glitchy". Halfway into the game I've yet to experience a single glitch (save for maybe one of the bosses who moved around a bit weird after hitting them a certain way).

Also from Penny Arcade:

there is no one who can look at the final product and say that they see a good, or even finished, game.

Bullshit. I can. It's a simple-minded game with a small feature set, but to say that it looks completely "unfinished" is exaggeration. I typically respect Ben Kuchera but I had to stop reading his article right there.
