I saw spirited away at the local theatre last night again. It's simply amazing. Princess Mononoke rocked my world too.

I'll definitely be buying this set. Thanks!

Miyazaki has some of the most unique characters to ever make it to the screen.

The whole theater was laughing for like a whole minute during that scene! That is hysterical! Glad someone mentioned that scene.

Since this is a national release, I'd suggest waiting 'til next week, and checking Best Buy...they discount (heavily) new titles that aren't in their ads.

Case: Thunderbirds, volume 8 (just for example). Regular price: $30. Release-week price: $21 (rounding figures here folks).

I've been doing this for years....great way to get movies on the cheap. The real price can be found on their website. It's RARE they don't discount new releases.

I'll have to see these in stores...I want my damned widescreen! And I FINALLY get to see Castle in the Sky!!!!! YAYAYYAYAYAY

Some of you guys are right, but Sprited Away is nowhere near as great as the one Miyazaki movie that EVERYONE MUST SEE, My Neighbor Totoro. And if you see it, make sure it is the Japaneses subbed version and not the Americanized dubber version.

Only see Miyazaki films that are subbed, as Princess Mononoke is nowhere near as good as Mononoke Hime (Japanese name).

And Kiki's Delivery Service is not that good, not very entertaining and too childish without being cute, like Totoro. You don't really care about the characters and the story is too slow.

And it is not called Crimson Pig, man that name sounds stupid as hell, call it by its Japanese name of Porco Rosso, and this is another great one to see.

Grave of the Fireflies is great, but one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen, so be prepared.

Nausicaa and Laputa (AKA Castle of the Sky) are both excellent in both story and animation.

Look on Ebay for a special DVD collection only released in Asia (awesome boxes and covers) that contains EVERY Miyazaki film (at least all the big ones) and the 2 DVD version of Sprited Away, they are not crappy VCDs, real DVDs. i am not promoting them or anything but I will buy it soon.

Go here to see what I am talking about (this is not my auction, there are many others, this is just the cheapest):

Post your replies here. Just remember to see the original and not the version that Disney crapped up, damn Minnie Driver.

Moro is a FEMALE wolf in both the English and Japanese versions of Mononoke. The voice actor in the Japanese version is a man who is well known for playing mysterious female leads.

that is a hard choice to make... since all of his animation are great... but if i have to make a choice, it would be either valley of wind, crimson pig or totoro....

My favorite is definitely Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind. I saw the butchered American version while in college. Later I picked up the Nausicaa Perfect Collection Graphic Novel vol 1-4 from Viz. Amazing works of art. One of the best comic/novel/books I've read. Ranks up there with all the classics.

Thx for the Ebay tip. I plan on getting these Asian versions. Hopefully the Asian version of Nausicaa is much better.

How do the other movies compare to Mononoke? I bought that movie on DVD and I hated it. I might be the only one but either it translated very badly or it's just not my type of movie. I liked the Ninja Scroll and some other anime but didn't enjoy the pace or story or the characters in Mononoke.

-show.

Hehe, I love doing that.

Character guide, from a translation of the Japanese press release: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Fuji/9270/chara.html

Blurb I pulled about actor: http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/mh/faq.html#voices

Showtime, most of Miyazaki's movies are aimed at children. They are excellent but slowly paced so you may not like them. Give them a rent. If it helps I think all of these are better than Mononoke.

Porco Rosso (crimson pig) is #2 for me, I like Castle in the Sky a bit better.

I have that set that qmaster recommended on ebay and it?s a good set if you understand Japanese. I wouldn?t recommend it for everyone though. There are subtitles, but they're not all that accurate although you definitely get a better feeling for the movie watching it in Japanese. The DVDs in this 3 pack have better subtitles if you're going to watch the Japanese version anyways.

I only saw the Japanese version of mononoke hime and I thought the wolf was female, but I cant back that up with anything.

Also, Totoro was good, but you cant say that any of his movies are that much better than the others. They're all excellent. The stories seem to get more mature in the later ones (mononoke hime and spirited away)

I've seen Porco Rosso and loved it. It's very hard to find, though. I still give Nausicaa the nod as my favorite.

I took my kids to see Spirited Away last weekend. I can't believe this was voted the best animated film and is the top grossing movie ever in Japan (what I've heard, someone please tell me it's not true.) Does Japan have some sort of rampant drug problem these days?? Apparently there has been no advancements in animation there since it looked just like Totoro. Obviously there are a lot of fans here, but I'm thinking the emperor has no clothes...

i went for the e-bay one. i e-mailed the seller to ask for a 'buy-now' option since i didn't want to wait and he replied pretty fast (like 1 hour) and said to just paypal him and he'll ship right after he gets verification. he's selling like 30 of them so there's plenty to go around. the total is $59 shipped from HK. i have bought dvds from HK before (initial d, evangelion, blood-the last vampire, escaflowne, fushigi yuugi, etc.) and they are pretty comparable to the releases you might pay here in the US but for like 1/5 the price...but like someone said, the translation isn't as accurate.

My older son is into all things Japanese. I took him and his younger brother to see Spirited Away when it first came out.
It does seem really odd to me, but the kids both loved it. I spoke to a Japanese-American friend of mine about it.
He said that if you are not familar with Shinto, a religion popular in Japan, it makes it a bit hard to follow. It is a
kind of Alice-in-Wonderland, but populated with gods (called spirits in the dubbed version) from Shinto.

I preordered a copy of Spirited Away from BestBuy for $17.99 shipped quite a while back. It is $19.99 shipped
now. My son has the sub-titled Hong Kong DVDs that I bought on EBAY of the other 2. It was part of a collection
he got for Christmas. Hong Kong doesn't enforce copywrite laws, so these are legal over there, and kinda grey
market in the US. Many of these, however, cannot be purchased in the US.

It has been a while since I have seen it, but I thought the animation was good. Not technically up to the
standards of Pixar, but well drawn.

Thanks Jason...I've been curious about this and the Ranma Asia collection....are the English subs good? I cringe every time I see the word 'dub' and 'English' together.
