I believe that "Crimson Pig" is the direct translation of the title in kanji.

I ordered all three from bestbuy.com at $22.99, $22.99, and $19.99. When I went to check my order status today, the order showed the original prices and a "final price" for each movie; Castle in the Sky $19.99, Kiki $19.99, and Spirited Away $17.99. Total was $57.97 + 4.29 tax, shipped.

Web site still shows the original prices, so YMMV. Maybe they are matching their planned in-store price on release day. Oh, and my vote goes to Porco Rosso...

Do NOT buy that 8 DVD set from ebay unless you're willing to support pirated works. It's a bootleg, completely unsupported by Ghibli - they get no money for it. See here:

Box set

Do your homework if this sort of stuff concerns you.

Also Grave of the Fireflies and Pom Poko are directed by Isao Takahata, though Miyazaki was pretty involved in each. Here's a filmography:

I downloaded almost all of the Ghibli movies from Kazaa while I wait for them to be officially released. Sure it's illegal but at least the pirates don't make any money from me.

I think the best animated film is also judged on storyline rather than totally state of art graphics.

Miyazaki has probably some of the most unique and original ideas in animation.

Also it doesn't follow the Disney type animation style so many copy today, so it makes the film look a little dated.

That is a great deal for 11 movies.... 2 per disk I wonder what the quality of these is though?

I recognize that packaging. I essentially have the exact same set -- except it doesn't have spirited away (I actuially have the legit r2 release of that). It's a HK bootleg, and the quality is . . . interesting. They are good, but that is because most are stolen scripts from fansubbers . . .

If you waited until Tuesday and bought them up in-store, you would get Princess Mononoke for free by buying the other three.

Yes, that is the true hot deal. $57.97 + sales tax for 4 Miyazaki DVDs. I'm glad I didn't pre-order...now let's just see if BB has the stuff in stock on Tuesday.

Thanks a lot Rorschach...damnation, I was 'this close' to buying from a California vendor. Damnation. Miyazaki earned every damned dollar....but in Hong Kong, everything's for sale (literally).

Thanks.

Picked up my set at BB this afternoon. They had about 20 copies of Spirited Away and 8-10 each of the other titles.

i'm quoting myself!

anyhow, i got the dvds last week and they are very very good quality. all of the dvds worked on my dvd player and on my computer. region free and nice quality. i'm happy : D

Some of you guys are right, but Sprited Away is nowhere near as great as the one Miyazaki movie that EVERYONE MUST SEE, My Neighbor Totoro. And if you see it, make sure it is the Japaneses subbed version and not the Americanized dubber version.

Only see Miyazaki films that are subbed, as Princess Mononoke is nowhere near as good as Mononoke Hime (Japanese name).

And Kiki's Delivery Service is not that good, not very entertaining and too childish without being cute, like Totoro. You don't really care about the characters and the story is too slow.

And it is not called Crimson Pig, man that name sounds stupid as hell, call it by its Japanese name of Porco Rosso, and this is another great one to see.

Grave of the Fireflies is great, but one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen, so be prepared.

Nausicaa and Laputa (AKA Castle of the Sky) are both excellent in both story and animation.

Look on Ebay for a special DVD collection only released in Asia (awesome boxes and covers) that contains EVERY Miyazaki film (at least all the big ones) and the 2 DVD version of Sprited Away, they are not crappy VCDs, real DVDs. i am not promoting them or anything but I will buy it soon.

Go here to see what I am talking about (this is not my auction, there are many others, this is just the cheapest):

Post your replies here. Just remember to see the original and not the version that Disney crapped up, damn Minnie Driver.

Jason

Thanks Jason...I've been curious about this and the Ranma Asia collection....are the English subs good? I cringe every time I see the word 'dub' and 'English' together.

I hate the fact that ebay is allowing stupid sellers to sell bootleg DVD's. On top of that, many of those sellers are always finding ways to try to scam us by adding stuff like "this is a brand new original imported dvd."

Ebay is definitely a case of 'money talks'...they make alot of money of bootleg DVD's. However, try and sell any Microsoft bootleg and within 24hours it's pulled.

It's all a question of who is paying you and who will cost you.

As a long time seller and buyer on ebay, I have seen many auctions, including DVD's, pulled from the ebay because of copyright laws. I do believe that ebay is serious about copy protection. If they were not, then they would be opening themselves up for massive lawsuits. That said, they do have some very real problems policing their own site. With so many auctions up at one time it becomes difficult indeed to track down all the law-breakers. Then again, I remember back many years ago, seeing "back-up" copies of all sorts of software and pc games up for sale. Those obviously are all gone. I would imagine that if ebay could find a quick and easy mechanism for tracking pirated dvd's then it would all dry up as well.

The problem with many of the HK and Malaysia DVD's that are sold on Ebay is that most are pirates but ebay really has no way of knowing unless somebody reports the problem back to them or one of their investigators stumbles on it. When somebody buys a $9.99 out of print criterion title without a booklet he/she probably knows that they are buying pirated stuff but then again this may be the only way for them to get the title cheap, they probably will not report the seller back to ebay.

Just my $.02
