I ordered a Geforce FX and reading all the information about the problems and lack of real performance gains compared to ATI.
Should I cancel and wait for the next generation card?
I here they are not going to have the ultra in retail only pre-ordered cards.
What do you think?
Thanks

I still think the GeForce FX is gonna rock!! Some Nvidia partners are going to use quieter fans, so noise won't be as much of an issue. Since the video card market changes so rapidly, there's never a great time to buy. The 9900 Pro sure looks attractive, but it's likely to cost as much as the FX.

The Geforce FX is gonna rock so much that they're not going to do proper off the shelf retail. They're only doing the pre-orders then stopping production.
Wait for the next ATi card, which should whop the GF FX, and no, I'm not a fanATIc, I've only ever had nVidia cards.

What? What were you saying?! I can't hear you over my GF FX!

LOL

I think I'd cancel were I you. If nVidia doesn't have the confidence in it to release it, why should you to buy it?

<thanks intuition that led him to buy R9700 months ago>

The FX is not really a dud. It may not even turn out to be that loud, from what HardOCP.com says. Is it the best bang for your buck? Probably not. Currently an overclocked 9700 would be that (IMO) or perhaps a 9500 Pro. But the FX is not a bad card. How much did you pay for it?

just curious, checked your rig and you have a GF4. Why would you get a GFFX when your current video card is good enough? Seems like a waste of $400 to me

"I always like the latest and greatest stuff."
Nothing wrong with that, but I don't think on March 9th the FX will fit either definition. The R350 should be out around then, and with an R300 coming close/beating the FX, it's pretty likely the R350 will be the "latest and greatest".

I think the FX is going to go down in history as a V5 6K type flop. Maybe nVidia should have left those 200 3dfx guys unemployed......

IT'S A DUD! The card scores way worse with Ansio and AA something 90% of people with these cards use, the card is over a $100 more expensive than the 9700pro not to mention the noise and heat problems. For some I guess Nvidia would have to ship dog turds in a box before they'd say somethings a dud.
And if all this wasnt enough, Nvidia themselves are only shipping a few cards, and the FX will never reach retail shelves. Nvidia themselves think its a dud and theres still some people questioning if its a dud. Sorry boys its a dud, I think everyone hoped for more, but it didn't show up.

Am I the only one who is having flashbacks of the Nvidia and 3DFX struggle of a few years ago. This reminds me of the V6000 flop, and the subsequent fall of 3DFX. Is Nvidia going the way of the 3DFX?

Cancel and preorder a R350 when it's announced. Same price, better performance, less noise, better image quality...

Orbius, I disagree. I find it hard to call it a dud when the benchmarks show that it beats the 9700 Pro in many bendhmarks. Also, production models of the FX are rumored to be quieter than the dustbusters that were reviewed. Is it less than expected? Yes. And I own an Radeon 8500, so there is no use in thinking that I am biased one way or the other. Now of course, you can call the FX Ultra dead. Then I would agree with you.

Sully, I agree with Spicedaddy. Cancel and order the 9900, or the buy the FX at a lower price in March (if it is quieter, if it is faster with new drivers, if it is less expensive, if ... if ... if ...). The only problem with the 9900 is that it will be announced March 12th. I would expect delivery in April.

I seriously doubt it, they haven't been reduced to throwing 4 GF3 GPUs into one board (or something like that) just yet, lol. The fact that it sounds like nVidia will have plenty of FX Ultras available for sale is a lot more comforting than the fact that the V5 6000 never made it to retail.

I would definately cancel your order and go for the next generation (ATI, or Nvidia), doesn't seem worth it in my opinion.

nVidia also have income from elsewhere, such as motherboard chipsets, Xbox, and the main end of the graphics market (no tth eexpensive cards)

There are similarities with the GF FX launch and the Voodoo 4/5 launch, but that's it. To conclude "nvidia is going the way of 3dfx" or even ponder it is quite a stretch, indeed. The Voodoo 5 was 2 or 4 VSA-100 chips crammed onto a single card using dated 3dfx technology with a couple of new features. The GF FX will have the most sophistocated DX9 engine upon release (unless R350 gets out first, but even still I don't think R350 will go much farther with DX9 features).

Nvidia doesn't just make graphics chips for the PC market anymore; they are in other markets as well. They are not a company teetering on the brink of profitability and hurting from several lackluster product releases, as well as a semi-sucessful merger with another company (3dfx was all of these things). Despite the fact that NV30 has been delayed by a whopping 6 months (which can be crippling in this industry) I don't think research and development sat idle in those 6 months. Surely they were working on the next core or two during that time, as they have been for the last few years (working on future cores even before the release of a prior one).

ATI plays catch-up with nVidia for two years and it's just that, ATI trying to get ahead, but always falling one step behind. Nvidia gets behind in the release cycle and that is a so-called sign of their inevitable demise??

Well thats exacly what happened with 3dfx, they got late on their new product, lost their edge threw people in to make voodoo3 to get time to finish their next gen thing, next gen thing was no longer good enough, needed more work, had to use resources to make voodoo5, you get the idea.

Certain people are in denial. The FX only would have been passably acceptable six months ago. At least it would have had near the same performance of the fastest card available despite being a hot noisy ah heck. By March it would simply not be viable for the price they need to avoid completely upsetting their current line up. Obviously they would only hurt profits further by discontinuing or drastically marking down most of the Geforce 4 line to make room for a $250 FX, which is probably what it would need to retail at.
