Predator continues to kill our goats

We've lost two goats in three days. Last one wasn't but five minutes ago. They were our two foundation does, our sweet friendly ones. All we have left are their kids from last year and this year.

This year just fucking sucks. Lost both dogs and now both our "pet" goats in four months, only livestock left.

Husband was actually sitting and watching for the damn bear tonight too, but the goddamn thing got in and out before he had a chance to get a clear glimpse and shoot it.

Rest in peace, little goats. I'm sorry you had such a scary end. We will try to protect your babies; hopefully we can do it better than we protected you.

What kind of bear is killing all these?

You sure there isn't a zombie invasion breaking out over there?

Dunno, but Fish and Wildlife will probably find out for us. If the bear came back two days out of three, I bet it will be back again.

Bear is all we can figure. The trail it left in the grass was too big to really be anything else, and it went through the goat pen by bending the t-posts almost to the ground, not sure what else could do that.

either this guy

or this guy

but in all seriousness, it sounds like you need a new dog or two, get something like a german shepherd (protecting livestock was what they were bred for).

Both our dogs died this year, one in May, one a few weeks ago. We are moving in a few months and can't get new ones til we're done, just logistically.

Fucking bear will probably come back tomorrow to keep picking our goats out of the buffet. I bet you anything the next-friendliest goat is next in line for slaughter.

I have a friend that has a lot of animals and lives in bear country. He shoots them with bird shot from a shotgun. It doesn't really hurt them, but they get the message and stay clear of his place. Mountain lions, on the other hand, he shoots to kill when he sees one.

Wait for it with a .338 mag or higher gun. Seems simple enough, a 30-06 might cut it depending on size but for a clean sure fire kill shot i would prefer a 338 mag for a bear.

Never heard of bears eating livestock. But we don't have many bears in S.C. Large cat of some sort?

Sorry.

Somewhere else you could move the goats for the time being? Farther from the woodline maybe.
Lights with motion sensors might scare it away.

^^ This - best to drive them away with pain so that they remember to not mess with your area than to straight kill them IMHO. If the bird shot fails, then bust out the heavier weapons.

sounds like some humans and goats have invaded the bears natural territory.

not sure why anyone would be mad at the bear.

RIP Goats

So it isn't legal to trap them, but you can still shoot them (assuming that they are endangering your livestock)?

I'd put a goat out as bait, tied to a tree or something, and sit on the back porch with a rifle.

Why? It's like when developers build subdivisions in prime mountain lion habitat, then hysterical soccer moms get all over the news freaking out when the mountain lions continue patrolling their territory (which happens to be hysterical soccer mom's back yard now.)

We even had some on the news in Portland freaking out about coyotes. I kid you not.

This is "native" in the sense that the entire state is "native" territory. Have not had an issue before. Historically, these are grazing lands with few to no large predators. More so, human overpopulation has pushed predators here over the recent several years.
