The massive increase in "Defense"' spending and the neglect of other domestic (and international) activities that came with that.

The measure of a leader is how well he surrounds himself with good people. If GW was a bad judge of character and chose bad people who led him to bad decisions, that's still on him.

Here's the thing about books revealing political "secrets", they aren't secrets. They probably never were, and as such probably don't matter all that much.

How do you know something revealed was ever a "secret"? When it's not leaked in a book, but in a press release. When Snowden told us about the NSA, he didn't write a fucking book about it.
