As a dark chocolate lover, I appreciate their rocky road. Godiva markets the BEST dark chocolate in the national premium brand category, imho.

But I'm sure many of these regional brands beat both of the above.

And, again, Breyers' is an A-1 non-premium choice. They were originally a local Philly brand, and used to come out with flavors you no longer see from them from time to time, such as a Dutch Chocolate flavor that truly kicked ass. Their peach and strawberry flavors still rule in the "regular" category.

Breyer's tastes the best to me, of the store-bought brands.

As for ice cream shops, Goodberry's frozen custard is head and shoulders above anything else.

Haagen Daaz ftw, I have been to several of their plant facilities and they make it very well with very little air content.

Graeters is the best ice cream that I have ever had. They are local to Northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati area.

Highly recommended if you are in the area.

I'd like to be there when your IQ raises high enough for you to finally have that "D'OH!!" moment and comprehension dawns on you that you will NEVER find good ice cream in a supermarket. But there is one indisputable truth to mass market consumerism: The same people who buy ice cream from a supermarket buy pizza from Dominoes, Mexican food from Taco Bell and deli sandwiches from Subway. Seems to be a local brand. But the ingredient list reads like what I use to make homemade icecream, Milk, cream, powdered milk, cane sugar, peppermint oil. For their peppermint icecream. Unlike some others that use eggs, guar gum or locust bean gum, and other ingredients that you have to google to figure out what they are.

Simple is always best for food.

Hansen's Dairy out of Green Bay is my favorite ice cream by a longshot.
Otherwise I like Custard Cup out of Danville Illinois.
When it comes to more well known places, I'm pretty happy with Baskin Robbins 31 flavors/Coldstone/Oberweiss/Dairy Queen.
