It also illustrates the importance of reading the label -- besides being a "no-name" brand, it only contains 69% protein, versus Optimum's 82%. Also, Optimum has been tested as meeting or exceeding label value by every consumer watchdog group that has popped up in the last 10 years (this is from magazines; I don't know if any weblinks exist for this testing). And you will find that Optimum has a sterling reputation among any of the bodybuilding forums -- e.g., alt.misc.fitness.weights, bodybuilding.com -- and it is the market leader by sales volume.

With the "Solid Muscle" protein, you are getting 1.3 less lbs. of protein per 10 lb. container. Worse, the missing volume is filled with empty calories, the maltodextrin you see on the label. Maltodextrin is aka corn starch, and is a dirt-cheap filler. Its glycemic index is higher than any sugar -- so they would have done better to add table sugar!

I don't care if you don't like protein shakes (why post on this thread?), but you haven't thought it through if you think you can make and consume 60-70 g of protein as easily and cheaply any other way.

Thanks for the link. I just ordered 5 lbs of the cookies and creme. If it tastes/mixes well I'll get a bigger jug.

Thanks again. =]

I don't know if yu have tried cookies 'n cream before from Optimum, but it tastes horrible. Stick to the basics with Optimum: chocolate or vanilla. If you want an extravagant flavor, Primaforce sells Whey Protein Isolate with Watermelon or grape flavoring. The grape is supposed to be really good.

Since this thread popped up again, I've been really happy with my protein factory order from a month ago. The inexpensive whey protein tastes better than it used to -- definitely competitive with Optimum and others.

Protein Factory's milk protein isolate is just outstanding in taste. If you've been reading about the benefits of caseinate protein, the milk protein isolate is about 80% casein/20% whey. Casein can have an unpleasant "chalky" taste, but this stuff is quite good. If anybody remembers the original MetRX "Plus" formula, it tastes and looks very similar.

Definatly i was trying to find where the guy quoting me seen 66% protien cuase i dont see it on the site or on my bottle and the guys that run allsportsnutrition are serious about bodybuilding. Theres NFW they sell such cheap protien.

Not only that but Whey isolate doesnt come in anything lower than 80% pure protien. ( i get the two confused all the timeso i might be refering to the other)

I still stand to what i said your getting about 90% protien in solid muscles whey try emailing Allsports or asking in their forums which is very active less bs than BB.com even so if you need answers.

btw

Allsportnutrition was the leading ON seller for a while tille they found the cheaper Prorated who they and everyone else dumped for lieing about ingredients.

Everyone who is concerned with mixability should pick up a Hamilton Beach Drink mixer like this one
http://www.hamiltonbeach.com/p...drink_mixers/730c.html

My sis gave me one for xmas (she works for HB) and what I originally thought was just going to sit on the shelf, I use it every day for protein shakes. It mixes fantastic, and is quick and easy to clean.

Also, if you mix the protein 50/50 with dry milk (big boxes available at Sams/Costco) it really really improves the taste, along with adding some milk protein to the drink too. I use 2 scoops in my drinks so I still get all the whey as I would with 1 scoop of just whey.

dingobite, you need to read the label values.

Solid Muscle
protein per serving = 22 g
serving size = 31.9 g

22.3/31.9 = 68.9%

They don't spell this out -- obviously! That's because they're adding crap filler to lower their prices. The consumer has to be intelligent enough to read and interpret label values.

I still stand to[sic] what i [sic] said your[sic] getting about 90% protien[sic] in solid muscles[sic]
OK, then, nothing more to be said.

I agree that Optimum is a great brand - mixes very well and tastes among the best as far as the more mainstream whey goes. I've tried quite a few flavors - cookies and cream is pretty bad, strawberry is ok but kinda sweet. My favorites are vanilla, chocolate, or chocolate mint.

On a separate note, has anyone seen deals on Cytosport's Muscle Milk? I've heard a lot about it and am running low on protein anyways.

Optimum Nutrition
Serving size 29.4g
protien per serving 22g (ad has 23g listed)

Solid Muscle
protein per serving = 22 g
serving size = 31.9 g

22.3/31.9 = 68.9%

Your getting 6 more scoops ??????????????????

Theres two wheys forms one doesnt produce under 92%/91% or so after being produced which you can loose about 5% off the what the label is saying.
The other is around 60% pure whey and trash pretty much for $$ results.

Ive a tub of ON and SM in my hand and they are almost identical your confusing serving size to what the amount of protien is in each scoop or something cuase you cannot point out every single protien in each scoop the way you are.

My two cents...

Vitamin Shoppe is having a sale on protein. 5lbs of Optimum Nutrition is 24.99. They have other brands too that are on sale. Also, there was a coupon in newspapers in CA for 10 bucks off 50. Makes the deal real sweet. If you're nice to the guy at the counter, he'll get one from the register for you especially if you open a free "frequent buyer" card.

As for Muscle Milk, I didnt like the stuff that much. It's more for losing weight. Cytosport's Cytogainer is the stuff for building mass.

Hope this helps people out.

dingobite, I really don't wish to be rude, but you are not understanding the basic math here.

Optimum Nutrition whey protein has 23 g of protein per 28.4 g serving size.
23/28.4 = 81% protein

Note that 28.4 g = 1 oz. -- this is the industry standard serving size. A 5 lb. bag of ON protein has 80 servings, exactly, because there are exactly 80 oz. in 5 lbs.

Solid Muscle protein is diluted, as noted, by the addition of "crap calories" maltodextrin. This is why there is only 22 g of protein in a larger, non-industry-standard serving size of 31.9 g. They might as well add white flour or table sugar -- because the idea is to dilute the product as cheaply as possible.

To answer one of your questions, yes, you will have less servings per 5 lb. bag of the Solid Muscle because each serving size is larger. A 5 lb. bag has 11,025 grams in it; that is a fixed, set amount, not a "guess."

Sorry, but you have been deceived in exactly the way that the "Solid Muscle" people were counting on.

As noted above, Optimum Nutrition has also been independently tested to actually have a higher percentage of protein than label value. But even at listed label values, you are getting 1.3 lbs. more protein per 10 lb. purchase with Optimum over Solid Muscle.

100% pure Maltodextrin from corn its a very good buy for bodybuilder it spikes your insulins way better than pure sugar cane its less fatting with less sweetness and also th esame ingredient you drink inyour beers.

Also called dextrose.

Im done here also solid muscle is a good buy believe it or not, the origianl product in this tread is giveing you nothing but the whey and its not good buy it you have no igredients like vitemins and stuff.
And watch out for muscle milk ive heard a bunch of stuff about it but the worst is its to sweet and your getting bad fatty sugars out of it.

btw i have a 2lb bag of cornstarched sugar dextrose in my cabinate right now.

Dextrose: Better known today as glucose, this sugar is the chief source of energy in the body. Glucose is chemically considered a simple sugar. It is the main sugar that the body manufactures. The body makes glucose from all three elements of food, protein, fat and carbohydrates, but in largest part from carbohydrates. Glucose serves as the major source of energy for living cells. It is carried to each cell through the bloodstream. The cells cannot, however, use the glucose without the help of insulin. When sampled in blood, glucose is tested in transit

1fast400 has dextrose at $1.00 per pound. Wow! For $40.00, you can get 40 lbs. of "good" insulin-spiking, but somehow non-fattening, simple sugar, which must be full of vitamins and stuff! That's an even better deal than maltodextrin! Forget this whey protein stuff!

Actually, if you go to feed stores, you can find huge bags of it for even cheaper.

not sure what is sarcasm and what isnt..... ?

What is the best way to help your body absorb protein (and creatine)?

I read a while ago to drink apple juice or grape juice, but that gets a little expensive. What are the current thoughts and methods for absobing the supplements?

Way more knowledge on the subject here than I have but I will contribute. I'm a gastric bypass patient and have tried many of the brands listed (and not listed) here. I can honestly say that not one of them was worth a damn in flavor, unless you do as cremefilled listed and put a bunch of other crap in them.
HOWEVER, if you don't mind spending more $$ on something you can mix with non-fat milk by itself, and enjoy drinking, you should try the Ultimate Nature's Whey from American Longevity. Yes, you can mix other things like fruit, etc, if you want to in it, but the key is that you don't have to. The taste is better than any I have tried. It's a mix of milk, whey and soy protein and yeah, it's only 15 grams per scoop but if you HAVE to drink protein every day, it sure makes things a bit easier to swallow (pardon the intended pun).
Again, it's more expensive and has lots of other ingredients other than protein (vitamins, minerals, etc) but it's all about taste for me. I can drink an extra if need be to make up for a few more grams of protein compared to the others but I don't have to choke it down or bury it in pudding.
Just a couple of cents worth. No big deal.

Maltodextrin is a glucose polymer, while dextrose is essentially glucose. They are not the same carbohydrate, though they are both sources of simple sugars that bodybuilders use to spike their insulin post-workout.

In any event, a good source of dextrose that I've found is supplementdirect.com, though they do kill you with some pretty high shipping costs since they sull it in 10 pound buckets.

When I'm using protein powders I normally go for Isopure or some other form of Ion Exchange. They use an additional filtering process that removes the part of Whey that makes me feel bloated and therefore less likely to drink it. If Whey makes you feel this way try an Ion Exchange formula.

Sorry for bringing a dead horse from out of the stalls.

If you got a bottle that didnt mix for sh!t... YOU DIDN't get one of ours. That is the LAST thing anyone can say about our product. We use the SAME WHEY protein as OPTIMUM NUTRITION because I buy my raw protein from the same company Only diff. in ANYONES products are if they realy put what is on the label or not. Dont let HYPE fool you who dont know. MOST protein companies are ALL THE SAME. Formula has to do with taste and mixability. Some use more splenda or sweetner which is why you are paying ass loads more for a COOLAID tasting protein. The sweetners are 10X the cost of anything else in the bottle. Also, it depends on how much isolate the company puts in thier mix.

This is what i just started reading from the owner or one of the owners ??? at SolidWhey as for the sugar disposition its the ony sweetener used its lowfat and natural, at for animal feed how many animals do you know of that get their daily insulin shots by needle.

One more thing i believe ON whey protien purity lowest numbers by test are around 88%.

Optimum Nutrition is very good quality at a better price than alot of the other name brand Whey Protein powders. $23.95/5#.

Stick with vanilla, chocolate, chocolate chip mint (my favorite). I figured the cookies and creme were going to taste good, so I ordered 6 - 5# containers, big mistake. It almost reminds me of drinking vomit. It even smells like how your breath tastes right after throwing up. nasty stuff. What was ON thinking with that????

I've ordered from Protein Factory a couple of times in the past, and I've always had good service. Then, Costco started selling the tubs of whey, so I've been using that out of convenience. I recently got completely sick of both the chocolate and the vanilla flavors from Costco, after going through 2 tubs of each.

So, I ordered the strawberry from Protein Factory, and it's actually pretty damn good. It tastes kind of like a broke-ass weak strawberry quik, with the occasional burst of hardcore fake-strawberry flavor. I definately don't mind drinking it mixed with just water, and with milk it is better than most.
