I take it this is whey protein concentrate based on the very vague description on their site " A 5 Pound Bag of Micro Ultra Filtered WPC"?
Most whey powders you buy are a mix of isolate and concentrate. Concentrate being the low quality cheap stuff and isolate being the higher quality more expensive stuff. The problem is, this site gives absolutely no details of what is actually in this stuff. Its a good price for a mix, but if its pure concentrate I don't think its really that great of a deal.

Maybe there have been changes in the technology since I last checked, and I certainly don't want to spend the time looking into this again, but I was under the impression that there is no whey protein isolate for sale, it is always just a higher or lower percentage.

Re-reading your post, maybe that's what you meant though, since it's kind of splitting hairs.

If that second description was saying that this is about 77% protein per serving, that really isn't so bad. Usually the rest is not complete "garbage" as they say, it's to make it actually disolve in liquid, taste decent enough to choke down (I've endured some pretty godawful powders before) and hopefully some vitamins and minerals for your troubles.

I take it this is whey protein concentrate based on the very vague description on their site " A 5 Pound Bag of Micro Ultra Filtered WPC"?

That's actually highly specific: it means whey protein concentrate (aka "WPC") that has been filtered by being forced through microscopic-scale meshes.

This is an excellent buy.

These protein threads usually end in pi$$ing matches about creatine or protein being dangerous for one's health, and I've debated the frankly ignorant people who rant about that enough times on Anandtech. But here's some quick tips:

1. If you want really great tasting whey, try Optimum Nutrition (by far the market leader in sales volume) for $44.95/10lbs., free delivery, from vitaglo.com I like the taste and mixing properties better than Protein Factory, but I could live with the latter if necessary.

2. Try mixing shakes with ice, sugar-free instant pudding, and sweetener to taste. I personally like about 2 heaping tsp. of pudding per scoop (~ 22 g of Pro) of protein. Fruit is also good, and a bit of Crystal Light powder is also OK. Not all of these at once, however!

Orange Julius
60g Pro, vanilla
8 oz. orange juice
ice
6 heaping tsp. of SF pudding
1 pack of sweetener
water to desired consistency -- probably 16 oz.

Chocolate mint
60g Pro, chocolate
ice
approx. 24 oz. water
6 heaping tsp. SF choc. pudding
scant 1/4 tsp. of mint extract (not too much!)
2 heaping tsp. sugar-free Quik
2 packs sweetener

Vanilla milkshake
60g Pro, vanilla
ice, 24 oz. water
5 heaping tsp. SF vanilla pudding
5 heaping tsp. cheesecake (not SF) instant pudding
2 packs sweetener
(frozen strawberries/other fruit also good in this)

Berry blast
handful ea. of frozen blueberries, strawberries, blackberries (total maybe 3/4 cup)
60g Pro, vanilla
6 heaping tsp. SF vanilla pudding
24 oz. ice & water
2-3 packs of sweetener

Chocolate butterscotch
24 oz. ice & water
60g Pro, chocolate
7 heaping tsp. SF butterscoth pudding
2 heaping tsp. SF Quick
2 packs sweetener

Those are my most "gourmet" recipes. Pistachio SF pudding is also good, as is Lemon SF pudding -- but I've only seen the latter for sale at Kroger foodstores.
Other good combinations:
van. pro, vanilla pudding, apple juice, cinnamon
van. pro., vanilla pudding, pumpkin pie spice
choc. pro, chocolate pudding, instant coffee (esp. Hazelnut)
choc. pro, chocolate pudding, cinnamon
strawberry pro, vanilla & cheesecake pudding

I add in 1-2 tsp. of psyllium powder to each shake for dietary fiber. The "Equate" brand laxative powder, unflavored, is a good buy at WalMart. Milk will make the shakes more thick, which can be good or bad -- I like pretty thin shakes. The Hood low-carb skim milk is mostly protein (about 2/3 by calories), and tastes just like the real thing -- maybe better than regular skim.

For convenience, I have small plastic tubs (Hefty brand I think -- but I mean tupperware style) of 6 different puddings, and 3 large tubs (maybe qt. size) for choc./vanilla/strawberry whey protein.

P.S. -- anybody remember a "Bodybuilding Chow" whey protein thread, going way back? That was my first post on Anandtech.

Not bad, but I've been paying $20 for 6lbs at costco, which is actually a little cheaper than this after you factor in shipping.

modedepe, what brand of whey is that? And what percentage of protein is it? (Look at: protein (g)/serving size (g).) The "1 lbs. free!" proteins I have seen actually add worthless filler, such as maltodextrin, and contain around 65-70% protein -- meaning there is no extra protein at all.

This Protein Factory special is about 77% protein. Optimum is about 82%.

Don't forget salestax.

I've been getting the Costco stuff too. I think there are a couple different kinds they use depending on location. Mine is some Pure Protein by Worldwide brand. Some costco's carry one called Pro Rated instead. Looked like decent stuff from the label but I don't remember the details offhand.

I think I'll try that Optimum Nutrition stuff next, I always hear people talking about it.

Yeah I've got the pro rated stuff made by protein usa (that's all I've seen at the costcos I've been to). It's ~73% protein.

And for the pr0n reference you can try all the whey.

I agree with one of the previous posts that Optimum Nutrition makes a quality product at a good price. But All the Whey is currently my favorite supplier. It's high quality, mixes very well, and tastes good.

My $0.02 on allthewhey: it doesn't mix well, compared to every other commercial whey I've tried (maybe 8 or 9 brands). I would guess that it isn't pure whey protein concentrate, and has some casein mixed in (which would it make it clumpy, and would explain the thickness even after it is dissolved). The price is good, and the chocolate tastes good, but the vanilla has a bit of a "bubblegum" flavor. I tried 20 lbs., then switched back permanently to Optimum at a very slightly higher price.

Link 36.99 for 10lbs.

Heres a better deal this stuff is almost like a twin brother to optimum nutrition whey protien.

I was about to jump on this deal till i seen the want 11 buck for all the important stuff. If you want just protien by itself just eat foods with protiens in it thsi stuff is basically a waste.

Everyones also dumping Prorated as i just found becuase the label isnt correct.

btw
Just like ON, SW makes me FART like S*&% so im not into those brands except a few times a weeks and i do have a few tubs of the stuff.

dingobite, the link you give is $37 + 5.95 shipping, making it the same price as vitaglo.com's Optimum with free shipping, unless you buy 30lbs. or more.

It also illustrates the importance of reading the label -- besides being a "no-name" brand, it only contains 69% protein, versus Optimum's 82%. Also, Optimum has been tested as meeting or exceeding label value by every consumer watchdog group that has popped up in the last 10 years (this is from magazines; I don't know if any weblinks exist for this testing). And you will find that Optimum has a sterling reputation among any of the bodybuilding forums -- e.g., alt.misc.fitness.weights, bodybuilding.com -- and it is the market leader by sales volume.

With the "Solid Muscle" protein, you are getting 1.3 less lbs. of protein per 10 lb. container. Worse, the missing volume is filled with empty calories, the maltodextrin you see on the label. Maltodextrin is aka corn starch, and is a dirt-cheap filler. Its glycemic index is higher than any sugar -- so they would have done better to add table sugar!

I don't care if you don't like protein shakes (why post on this thread?), but you haven't thought it through if you think you can make and consume 60-70 g of protein as easily and cheaply any other way.

Thanks for the link. I just ordered 5 lbs of the cookies and creme. If it tastes/mixes well I'll get a bigger jug.

Thanks again. =]

You got optimum nutrition cookies and creme? That might have been a grave error. I've never had it personally, but that seems to be the one flavor people always say never to get as it tastes like total ass.

The WPC in the name of the item tends to suggest that it is just Whey Protein Concentrate.
