People are now getting their STi rebates according to posts elsewhere.

Currently, Plan 1 costs you minimally 10 cents/day whether you use your phone or not. And minute usage charges at 10/12 cents/day depending on time and day of week. And for 19-cents/per day one gets unlimited web access. Other plans available

My wife has very limited phone needs, as she is mostly home with our newborn right now. Our best bang for the buck is getting Tracfone's refurbished phone and then maximizing minutes and contract length. Total cost is $20 for a decent Nokia 1100 phone with 240 minutes you can stretch to 7 months.

For anyone interested:

Go to Tracfone's site, then click on "BUY PHONES." After entering your zip code scroll down to "Best Deals" which show the reconditioned phone they are currently selling (at this point for my zipcode the Nokia 1100 phone comes up.) It comes with a 60 minute card.

Method on maximizing minutes and time:

1. 20 minutes for 30 days - Activate your phone online. That nets 20 minutes just for activating. This period is a little rough as one has to go with only 20 minutes for as long as possible. Obviously, if needed add the minutes in the next step earlier than at Day 30.

2. 100 minutes for 90 days - Go to Ebay and look for "tracfone minutes." Many folks offer a 100 minute friend referral "for new signups" free of charge. In fact, many actually pay you $5. They get 100 minutes themselves for the referral. Take advantage of this, and pocket the $5. Apply the 100 minutes to your tracfone. Whatever you did not use of the initial 20 minutes is added to the 100 minutes. So far, so good, this takes you to the end of the 4th month.

3. On the day that is shown as the last day of active service in the phone's display window take the 60 minutes card (sometime they give you only 40 minutes, depends) that you had put in a safe place 4 months prior, go to http://www.tracfone.com and click "Add airtime." Enter the info from the card PLUS any coupons. Tracfone usually has codes floating around to double these 40 or 60 minute cards. In the case of the current 60 minute card that now gives you 120 more minutes to add. Best places to look for the doubling-codes are places like fatwallet.com or slickdeals.net. Any minutes you had left over from the previous 4 months are added to the 120 minutes you add here. Your activation clock is reset for another 3 months, which brings you to the end of month 7.

After month 7 the only option with THIS phone is to add minutes the convential way, by buying them. Too expensive. Drop the phone (makes a good gift for a kid) and get another refurbished deal for $20 with 200 to 240 minutes for 7 months.

Deal calculations:

Refurbished phone $19.99
Shipping Fedex 3-day $4.95
________________________
Total Phone cost $24.94

Credit $5 for the 100 minute referral deal via Ebay

DEAL COST: $19.94 for 240 minutes spread out over 7 months.

Works for my wife's limited minute needs. The only thing is that after the 7 month period is over the better deal is to start the 7-month/240 minute cycle over again, which means you lose the cell phone numbers. That could be a pain for some, as you may have to give everyone your new cell number. Also, any unused minutes on the old phone would be lost, so be sure to use up your minutes before you move over to another refurbished phone with them.

Staples sent me a rebate confirmation but I'm PISSED about the change in the plans. Only for very limited usage are these phones worth the trouble since they charge fees and airtime for everything. So who has the best regular cell phone deal so I can ditch my lan line?

Nessism-

It depends on how many minutes you need, if you primarily call on weekends and if you need LD.

I personally use T-Mobile's Regional 3000 Anytime Minute plan for $49.95. I can use 3000 minutes anytime during a month, but they have to be regional (regions vary.) My region covers all of Florida and part of Georgia. I've seen a Northeast region encompass 6 states.

Since you are in Cali: Perhaps MetroPCS is available to you? They have limited reach, but I believe they are in California. Unlimited minutes anywhere in the US for $40. If you add $5 you get a host of extra features like voicemail, unlimited text messaging, 3-way calling, etc. http://www.metropcs.com

I received my "check's in the mail" notice from StaplesEasyRebates.com -- w00t!

As for other low-usage prepaid plans, I still use the TDMA (Cingular) plan from CallPlus. This costs me $10 every 3 months for 40 minutes of airtime. If I ever need to go over that, airtime costs less in larger blocks (e.g., $20 for 90 min.). Unused time rolls over if you refill within 90 days. They also have CDMA (Verizon) and GSM (Cingular) service available. The only reason I got the STI phone for the gf is that she's in a Cingular TDMA deadzone.

I received the "check is in the mail" e-mail from Staples too.

Can this phone be used with, for example, Net10? 10 cents a minute with no other charges
is a deal.

I received the email as well. I received 1 check on Saturday. I'm still waiting on 3 more. Has anybody else received multiple rebates yet?

I am going to be in the UK for a couple weeks this summer, and we were thinking of just picking up a cheap prepaid there, but I have heard its better to buy a unlocked phone here and get a UK sim card for the carrier you want off ebay etc. so you know the phone number etc. before you leave the country.

We use a T Mobile prepaid, still on the first $100 but the first year is coming up soon.

So far my Tmobile prepaid phone to use in UK search has the cheery news that apparently any Tmobile phone almost EXCEPT the Nokia 6010 that I have works fine with a UK sim. Maybe thats for the best instead of taking the phone we normally use to the UK, rather than picking up a new one we wouldn't miss losing.

We have 90 days left on the $100 of prepaid we bought last year, but nobody seems to be posting good deals on refills.

Some bad news for STI users.... looks like the company is going under. Reports are heads have left and there are two employees remaining.

This is supposedly the parent of STI:

The Company has currently two employees (one of whom is the chief executive officer); the employment of all other employees has been terminated.... In the near term, should the Company be unable to obtain additional investment or consummate a sale, the Company will be forced to shut down..

Indeed it's really bad. I just bought airtime for $30 and it seems going to nowhere. Generally I like service of STi mobile. Probably they are too cheap.

It isn't good for the industry for any company to go poof, so maybe somebody will buy them up and honor the contracts etc. Its a cheap way to get customers unless there is some technical issue, like obsolete infrastructure.

Well, at least we got the STI rebates. There's a few bucks left on the A660 I got for my gf -- we'll hold off buying more airtime till this sorts out. I too think it's likely some other carrier will snap them up. Mebbe also there's an unlock code for these phones to work with other plans.

If I want to port my STI number to Tmobile or some other service, do I need to do so *before* STI discontinues its service (assuming for now that it will be doing so)? To put it another way, if STI were to shut down before I could do that, would there be any way for another company to verify/port my STI number?

My understanding is that the OLD company has to release your number, so you might be hosed already, ie nobody around to do stuff that makes them zero money.

You don't really need a deal; just pick up a $10 card and that will extend your leftover minutes for another year. And of course you always save 3% whyen you buy additional minutes at cheapphonecards.com

So get the phone and the SIM on eBay before you leave.

Theory I would say yes you can, in practice maybe.

Get the new phone and then request the old number, your new phone company sends that request to the old one. Don't just quite the old one as your number poofs.

Are you sure that Uphonia/Smartserv owns Telco Group? It looks like their aquisition plan fell through. I'm not sure to what extent Telco has ties with on Uphonia/Smartserv.

STI and all these other wireless pay-as-you-go "providers" are merely using the infrastructure of the real carriers. They have deals with the national carriers and pay them low bulk wholesale rates, so they are able to give consumers cheap pay as you go plans. So basically they are just middle-man type companies, usually small time since they only have limited custimer service and no retail locations.

STI minutes you buy do not expire but they do charge $3.00 per month against your account balance for some type of service charge.

Also, if you get one of the phones that are free with $80 purchase of minutes (like the LG125 which I have) , note that the initial $80 of minutes purchased to make the phone free needs to be used up in 90 days or it expires.

Also, I recently worked with the support people when I got my new phone. There was no wait and the service was great. Didn't seem like there were only two employees or that the company is going under by any means.

Yes I believe you can. A friend at work switched to a regular monthly pay plan with Verizon to STi and it was easy. It just takes about 12-24 hours for the switch to take full effect.
