Huh? If someone could build a car that ran on water I doubt we would still be using gasoline.

Oh, we could definitely build one. It's a question of efficiency and cost, though.

I have a crappy student budget too.

Say if you average 1500 miles each month - with an average of 30mpg - you're buying about 50 gallons of fuel each month. At $2.50 a gallon - around $125 a month in fuel expenses. If fuel jumps to 3 bucks - you're looking at $150. A whole 25 bucks - big deal.

Yep. I'm spending about $90 a month right now, and pull anywhere between 1500 and 1700 miles / month. If gas hit $3, for me it'd end up being between $120 and $130 depending on Summer / Winter mileage. Luckily I'll be able to pull back 2-300 miles per month through December soon, so that'll help.

I still see drivers flooring it when the light turns green, pulling out to pass a car just before both cars exit the highway, and speeding in residential areas, so a lot of people don't seem all that concerned about fuel economy.

I think I've added about 80 miles of travel to each tank of gas by driving with gas mileage in mind. My car has a display that can show instantaneous gas mileage and hard acceleration is yields only about 4 mpg.

Monitor tire inflation.
Keep useless crap out of the trunk.
Windows up on the highway.
No hard acceleration other than merging on to a highway.
Watch RPMs to stay in overdrive gear.

I also changed some routes that I take frequently. I noticed that in some cases I could travel a little more distance while avoiding some stop signs/traffic lights and it didn't take any longer. Same for avoiding large hills if possible. I also think about using a route with more right turns so I can possibly turn on red instead of sitting through the entire cycle.

I don't even pay attention to this. If I could do something about it maybe I would but as it stands I'll just keep pumping away until it hits $4-$5/gal or I get into a vehicle that doesn't get 30-35mpg.

You forgot drive slower.

They repaved a section of highway i drive on daily. with the speed limit getting bumped from 70 to 60, was able to squeeze at least another 60 miles out of a tank of gas. This is a 40 mpg civic.

Wow, a driver with a brain. What a concept.

2.55 regular in Oceanside, NY...

GOV is telling us to deal with it... so there is nothing we can do. I would not bitch about it, but money is tight sometimes. The first thing i do on payday is fill up the tank and i try to keep off the road on weekends to preserve gas.

This is bad news, not only because gas prices are high, but also because people seem WILLING to pay those prices. If the gas companies see drivers willing to pay $3 a gallon, what incentive do they have to lower prices?

Yeah driving slower moved me from 36-37 to 38-40MPG on my Civic. Used to drive a Focus hat got 25MPG ave. Smartest thing I ever did was give that to a family member and buy a new Civic. Payments are a little more, but gas savings + higher resale target mean I can come out with more money in the end. I already have about $1500 in equity built up (down payment was larger that usual).

I always cringe at this logic. A whole 25 here a whole 25 there - not alot at first but it adds up over time.

Remember it hasn't been 3-4 years that gas was just a buck a gallon. By this math it has already went up 75$ in 3 years. . .

If it goes up 75$ every 3 years then in 12 years it will be over 450$ for the same driving as above.

I know my wages are not going up that fast.

Not to mention the price of things on the shelf at stores are going to rise proportionally to the higher gas prices. It is costing us much more. Don't forget heating prices.

I'm hoping the OP was referring to hydrogyn fuel.

Come on... the oil giants are only billionaires and they so desperately want to become trillionaires... we HAVE to help them!

Besides, oil companies need to raise prices to break last quarter's record profits.

careful, you might infuriate the speed demons of ATOT. because they NEED to be faster than the rest of the traffic on the road

people complain about fuel economy and gas prices, yet they had the inexplicable urge to floor it when the light hits green, speed up just to get in front of the car ahead of them only to get off at the next exit and speed up just to get to the next light despite the fact that it is red

<== Challenges you to do his commute on a bike every day (It's entirely possible, and 90% of it would be on a nice, neat, wooded, hard-packed/paved bike trail) - 45mi each way on a bike. Gotta be there at 8AM.

Enjoy.

Hah, I was behind a semi coming off a traffic light on an uphill grade. Acceleration was slooooooooooooooooooooow. About 10 cars behind me swung around to pass - and neither I nor the truck I was behind had to stop at the next light because we got there in sync with the timing. All the boyracers did, though.
