Preschool graduation party? WTF

According to my parents (I don't remember a goddamn bit of it) there was a full blown commencement ceremony for Kindergarten. With achievement certificates given out and everything.

Also according to my parents, my reaction to the entire process was one of disdain, since if everybody got a certificate, it couldn't be that big a deal.

Now, if parents want to have a party for graduating kindergarten, or a half birthday, or just to have a party, well, fuck it. It's their money.

Well the next closest thing I have to complain about is that I don't enjoy thinking about alcohol after our weekend at a beer expo but other than that not really. My life is generally pretty good these days

The continuous praise of mediocrity absolutely kills me. This is why few people are truly excellent.

In elementary school, I got a ribbon for some track&field event. It said "participation." I don't think I knew what that word meant, but I did know that it wasn't 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

Yes, you could do other activities but those are irrelevant to your rant. If you have a better activity, then do it regardless of whether you were invited or not to this party. But, regarding this specific party you can attend or not attend, those are your two choices. You chose the not attend and complain path.

My daughter's preschool had a small graduation celebration. It really wasn't a big deal, just the kids doing some skits and stuff followed by a potluck dinner. It was fun.

There weren't any private parties associated with it nor have I ever heard of such. Sounds like a big city / high society thing to me.

There was a graduation "ceremony" from my pre-school. I don't actually remember this (at least not in any significant fashion), but I have seen the pictures. It was 28 years ago. Not sure this is a remotely new phenomenon.

i graduated HS in 87. i had a commencement after 8th grade, but not a huge deal like it is now. i thought it was a cute thing when my kids had a kindergarten commencement, the grandparents were there and we all went to lunch afterwards. the whole thing took a couple hours because the school served juice and cookies and let the kids play for 1.5 hours while the adults chilled and talked.

i think having so many ceremonies cheapens the ones that actually matter. i also think a trophy for everyone cheapens the aspect of winning. i remember the last year i played soccer, my team was undefeated but got the same trophy as the losing teams. i didnt even keep that trophy, it basically meant nothing. the previous seasons were a fight for a 3 foot tall trophy that went from team to team until they got beat, that was part of the glory of winning. that was in 85 i think.

I don't think it has really changed that much. I graduated from high school in 1988. Lots of kids had parties, lots of kids didn't. Now I have nieces and nephews (and all of their friends) graduating high school and lots of them have parties and lots of them don't. Seems about the same to me. It does seem to trickle down though. Friends of mine that had parties when they graduated tend to throw parties for their kids now. Those of us that didn't have parties just go the other people's parties like we always did


I don't recall too many college graduation parties thrown by families, just some drunken orgies on campus.

I do remember having an eighth grade graduation ceremony way back in 1984, so schools have been doing stuff like this for awhile now.
