Anand review. Sounds to me like they call it a flop?? OC'ing looks good, but not that far above current levels of Northies.

Who's buying??

Think I'll stick with my 3.0c @ 3750mhz.

What the f? It's a flop now, but is built for later. Did you not understand that?

Prescott is however a promise of performance to come; much like the Willamette and even Northwood cores were relatively unimpressive at first, they blossomed into much sought-after CPUs like the Pentium 4 2.4C.

Guess we just need to figure out which ones are the 2.4Cs.

I 've been reading quite a few other reviews around the net. Seems to offer a bit better encoding but thats about it. Its slower than the Northwood. I think its bit early. I don't quite understand Intel. They release another EE which is clearly their best chip and yet they are bent on releasing this one and its clear it needs a bit more fine tuning. One thing I think is clear if AMD stays on tap with their ramp in speed and use of unbuffered ram Prescott I think will still be behind. But the truth is all these chips are out of my league. I 'll just stick with 2.4@3 gz and be happy for awhile.

I'm buying a 3.2 next week when they are available in my area.
I currently have a 2.4c that runs 3.3, but no higher. I have a watercooling setup, so it would appear that it is an advantage for me.
We'll see I guess.

Yes- I read the article. Why would I buy one "today" for "tomorrow"?? Maybe after it's refined, but not today.

My $205 (AT forum) 3.0c is a bargian today @ 3750mhz.

Thats exactly what anand said.

Increasing the pipeline by 55% and keeping IPC the same is a major accomplishment, this means 5.0ghz prescotts in 2005 will perform like a theoretical 5.0ghz northwood would. (actually according to the end of the article, it should be significantly faster, as the prescott scales better than the northwood does. )

yeah i'm sure we'll see some xtreme results soon....

just go check out xtreme tomorrow and see what's out...

i personally am not in favor of the new prescott for the moment...

if i get a prescott, it won't be until they switch over the socket and have pci express...

i guess i'll wait for the next steppings. by then there should be LGA775 and PCI-express . I'll take this moment and get off the upgrade merry-go round for now.

I'll wait for a new socket revision (my current mobo will not support prescott ) and pci-express

What a piece of crap this processor is, I think I'll stick to my Northy at 2.8ghz or look into an Athlon 64.
This hunk of junk doesn't overclock, runs hot as hell, and slow as crap. Maybe if this thing could do a guaranteed 3.6ghz overclock it might be worthwhile but Hardocp and Toms hardware said it was a piece of crap overclocker.

Did the anandtech review even give a Temp rating? Maybe I missed it. Also what heatsink did intel send out with the CPU's? Larger, smaller, copper????

From Anandtech's review 'Prescott's Little Secret' was very intresting. Thats where the juice is..the higher you ramp up the clockspeed the better it performs clock for clock compared to northwood.

Well, our review at Legit Reviews is up, we will do a follow-up detailing Temps and Overclocking. I can say that it is not a bad overclocker at all. At least not the one we have in hand so far. I will have a 2.8E in my hands Tuesday (hopefully). So, you will either find some nice screens fo it here, or you will find a cheap CPU to buy in the FS/FT listings.

It's kinda nice knowing that a 2.4C @ 3gig + would be on top on almost all of those benchmarks and it was < $170

I was thinking that it kinda sucked but given that it's got a 55% longer pipeline but performs about the same, it's actually pretty impressive. But the problem with it is it's heat production and current leakage. That will reduce it's clock speed limit from what it could otherwise be.

Maybe a few more metal layers would help it out? (just speculating)

Also what im curious about is if it will do 4+ with air...the benifit of the large L2 cache and low latency will show at around @4gz

3.2E@4 should be much faster then a 3.2C@4 since the penalty of the longer pipeline will be minimized...

I think I might grab a nice discounted price Northwood for the next couple of months and move to Athlon64 / Prescott once BTX, PCI - Ex, and DDRII go mainstream. Although Prescott's performance at these relatively low speeds is a little disappointing, if Intel can clock these suckers up as fast as the 55% increase in pipeline length would indicate they should, I think they'll be very nice.

BTW, if these chips can overcloock well, I don't see why an overclocker would choose Northwood over it; performance is similar at equivalent clock frequenc. So if 2.8E@ 4.0 GHz on air is feasible, it will outrun nearly all Northwood overclocks.

I agree....If these things hit that 4ghz number with some regularity and I mean ofcourse the 2.8's I wouln't mind jumping on one....At least then we can see nice rounded testing of all the other uses besides gaming....

However maybe I will get an Asus mobo so at least I can have the impression my temps are not high!!!!

I ofcourse was looking for some temp comparisons on this thing...AT mentions something about it in the opening about one would think faster, cooler, along with smaller was incorrect but I then doesn't seem to mention it when I read it...Did someone see it and I just glanced over it???

HardOCP's review showed their 3.2E running at 72C load and 54C idle on stock cooling.
