Okay I was at the egg looking at processors for a new rig I'm going to build soon and i saw the 2.8Ghz E Prescott and I compared it to a P4C which is the better deal? and if i do get the Prescott do I use a regular p4 heatsink?

The basic gist/jist? right now, is to go with the C, ie; northwood, as the prescott's are still first revision, and very hot as to heat dissapation. If you water cool, may be a diff story, but for a retail sink, I IMHO would stay away from the E series for now.

For now, the Northwood is probably your best bet since it probably performs a tad be better than the initial Prescotts. Also, as Big Lar said, Prescott emits a bunch of heat, so that's another thing to consider.

Why not a 2.8C? Faster than the 2.4C, cooler than the 2.8E, higher chance of OC than the 2.8E. IMO 2.8C is the best buy right now.

Amd 3000+ 64. Smokes em both and doesnt require watercooling like prescott.

Can you link to the intel reference documents that say water cooling required? Or maybe just the picture of a retail prescott with the included intel water block?

i think you have to be retarded to go prescott now....clock for clock they're no better than northwood and they run much hotter....what people also often overlook is that because of the increased power draw, mosfets and other components on the mainboard run much much hotter.....if you're going intel, go northwood

and a note to the guy who recommended amd a64 3000+....i had the pleasure of putting together an a64 machine last month and the resulting system was wicked fast. plus i used the msi board which supports cool n quiet, which was a nice bonus. the processor ran incredibly cool through the duration of our stress testing.

i'd recommend either processor/platform. but i don't think anyone in their right minds can recommend prescott

If you are buying it for games, go for the Athlon 64 3000+

If you do go with P4, I would get a P4C, but make sure your mobo supports Prescott, so you can upgrade in the future.

I don't know, when the included Intel heatsink can't do any better than keeping the processor under 70C at load...I would water cool it.

northwood IMO wait for socket 775 if you are over 1.6 ghz otherwise a 2.8 is a very nice upgrade

For right now i would probably reccomend AMD if your gaming, if you want a P4 then i'd choose a 2.8C over 2.8E anyday.

double

At least with Intel - at the moment - you can get an o/c'ing-friendly stable and mature MotherBoard.

And Northwood, definitely! (over the Prescott, currently) . . . I think the 3.0Ghz P4 might be the best "deal" if you are on o/c'er (although I managed to squeeze 3.4Ghz out of my 2.80c).

Ya, but who said anything about overclocking, I mean really, clock for clock the A64 is the best gaming chip period. I overclocked my 3200+ to 2.22GHZ and have had no problems with it at all, hopefully with the addition of some better RAM (OCZ Gold Rev. 2 PC3700) I will be able to achieve 2.3-2.4GHZ. Besides, who really needs to overclock when I'm kicking @ss at stock speed?

As mch187 mentioned, it's probably best to wait until Socket 775 Prescotts are released, and at higher clock speeds, during the spring of this year. If you must stick to Socket 478, then go Northwood, or P4C in other words. Socket 478 P4E (Prescott) processors are essentially useless for any consumer's needs.

Though if you're just an enthusiast you can always fiddle around with it simply because it's a new toy with new technology.

I agree with this completely, I just hope that Socket 775 Prescott's will not suffer the same heat issues that current Prescott's do. I am hard pressed to reccomend a Prescott to anyone, just for the fact that it runs so hot, and even if it's a great overclocker, you'll need a better form of cooling than air to keep it at reasonable temps. I was really looking forward to Prescott being a great chip, and it would be if it didn't operate at a 1/3 the heat of the sun (haha).
