Prescott + seti ??

just wondering how the extra pipelines might affect seti performance compared to the northwood at equal speed ??

anyone heart anything ?

I'd expect the boosted onchip cache from 512 to 1MB will make a huge difference. I've been waiting for the release of this chip and alignment to Northwood prices (expected around the 15th of February) to get a new system. The one I have now is OK, but is coming up on 5 years old and 7 1/2 hour WU ain't no fun anymore.

yeah but even though the prescott has more cache and a possibly higher clock speed it also has more pipelines and a lower ipc
so i don't know if it will be able to beat the northwood in seti mhz for mhz

anyone else heard anything ?

Maybe I'm confused but given the same clockspeed and ht wouldn't more pipelines and higher ipc only help?

I think that is suposed to read "lower ipc" and higher scalability.

Also, the price cuts for the northwoods are coming in on the 1st of feb last time I heard

Interesting article, thanks for posting that. I guess we'll find out for certain with hard numbers in a couple of weeks. I'm still leaning toward the Prescott though, especially if the prices are the same and I get 1MB of cache instead of 512K.

To me, in theory I would think Prescott would be a better cruncher than Northwood for the same reasons that Northwood is better than AMDs in stuff like media encoding and crunching. Longer pipeline (but how long we don't know) and lower ipc leading to better results in situations with easy branch predictions and worse performance in most everyday applications. Or is Northwood only better because of the hyper threading?

And I hear that Pentium-M processors are really good crunchers for their clock speeds which would make my first point seem wrong. Someone tell me what I'm thinking wrong...

well if i can afford one, along with a car and insurance, then i'll end up getting the 2.8ghz version
if all else fails atleast i'll have HT and more cache

i'll keep you all updated
i'll compare benchmarks and stuff when i get it

it will have a lower ipc count last time I checked.

Its sort of how the P3 @ same clock speed > Northwood
