Prescott Temperatures Examined

Was checking the review sites for the morning updates and saw that Legit Reviews looked at a number of cooling solutions while using the 3.2GHz Prescott to warm them up. Gets Pretty hot, but they got the numbers down in the 40's at the end! Not too shabby.

Nice review, i would liked to have seen a swiftech MCX4000 or Alpha cooler, as they are the crowned kings of northwood cooling.

Keep in mind that the testing was done on a workbench, not in a case. Dell and other OEM companies have their work cut out for them to develop quiet cooling for Prescotts, especially when the frequencies start to rise.

No they're not. Thermalright is easily has the highest performing heatsinks on the market.

Even though the chart shows the retail HSF at 70C we stopped testing at this point and the temperatures were still rising.

yeah I saw that -- Imagine those small closed up Dell and Gateway PC's! Or I swear I saw a company say they were putting Prescott's into a Laptop! I can see all the "burnt leg" law suits now!

No they're not. Thermalright is easily has the highest performing heatsinks on the market.

Exactly!! Thermalright and Zalman have the two best p4 cooling solutions out right now.

And to add my 2 cents.
Just went from the Thermalright SLK-900U to a Thermalright SP-94 and
got a 3C drop going to the SP-94 using the same fan, motherboard, etc.

Gotta love those Thermalright 5 pound heatsinks.

PPL also need to realize they did this on an abit mobo and unless they have a different method of getting the temps I think they represent the same higher then average temps reported on abit mobos of the i865/i875 chipsets but that goes back well into the i845 chipsets....

I say they need to try this on PastorJay's Asus and see what the temps look like then....

Another review at xbitlabs show the retail hsf doing 61c burn temp on an asus mobo and that is much better then the 70c and shutdown performance on the abit mobo....

There can be only 1 best which is the sp-94 and the thermalright is right behind it which is why i listed them in the order I did.

They tested each CPU with two motherboards. Here are the lowest (D875PBZ, Fujitsu D1607)

A64-3200: 62W/105W

P4-3.2C: 113W/182W
A64-3200: 110W/156W

Interestingly the P4C800 used 14-17% more power than the D875PBZ at idle.

Duvie, I will have a Prescott here shortly and will see how it goe son my Asus and the DFI. I am sure it will be a little cooler than the Abit. If not, I'll buy ya lunch... hehe

Is that going to be in Chicago or Portland???

Well, I have 3 to look at, but I will only use 2 probably. I have a Zalman 7000A AlCu, and I will have the Thermalright sp-94 as of Monday. I will be using a 92mm panaflo on it, and I have a SanyoDenkai 120mm that I may try and mod to fit.

ANd it will be in Chicago... hehe... I have never been in Portland. Trying to get one of these has been nuts though. I am waiting on mine from PcProgress, they are a local ship here for me (an hour away). I almost ordered from Azzo, but they were a little high for me at the time.
