Found this while searching for cheap glasses over at fw.
Anyone tried them before?

39dollarglasses.com also looks promising. It's been mentioned here before:

I know there must be something wrong with these . . . but I really want to order some.
Anyone have any history with them?

I sent zennioptical an enquiry about making some -17 glasses, and they have clarified how their business works. Apparently, the order is sent from California to a lab in China where the glasses are actually made. The representative claims they are very good at strong prescriptions (which makes sense, recognizing that high myopia is very prevalent among ethnic chinese). I will post more info if this enquiry yields more info or turns into an order.

Sorry for my political incorrectness, but I have a lot of friends and associates who are losing (or have lost) their jobs in the IT industry because those jobs have been transferred to low-wage Asian locations.

It already makes me a little uncomfortable that so many of my toys--er, 'puter parts, are from Mainland China. I'd like to think that some average Joe over there is getting a chance to work his way into an emerging middle class--but at the same time, it's entirely possible that parts are manufactured in a sweatshop with child or prison labor. There are even reports of Chinese brokers buying goods from North Korea and stamping "Made in China" on them.

There's a good chance that the optician I go to locally will be an emigrant from South Asia--but I'll at least know that taxes, etc. are staying here.

this is how glasses cost $119 in stores vs $19 at that website, and how buying an upper end computer cost $2000-$3000 a few years ago now costs $400-600.

although it is ironic that the #1 communist country is beating us at our own capitalistism
and china mostly stole the jobs from mexico not the US, thanks to nafta

FWIW, guys, remember that WallyWorld will do a basic prescription single vision set of glasses for $39. I've gotten two pair of them so far with no complaints.

wallyworld? Wheres that?

There were a few testimonials in Laughing Squid Forums Post mentioned above.

There is also one here:
Google Groups Post

They were all positive. According to the google groups link, it took 13days of the 14 stated on the website. Its pretty slow turnaround time, but for the price it may be worth the wait?

I also still like 39dollarglasses.com. They're based in the US and offer same day shipping (even overnight if you're in a rush). And, there are alot more testimonials/reviews for this company.

I was happy with $39, and $19 almost seems to good to be true.

Like I said, I'm still not convinced that they're playing squarely by the rules. Too much opportunity to exploit child/prison labor, unsafe/unregulated workplaces, lax environmental regulations, etc.

I suspect the US is giving up an opportunity to take back some of that trade... surely a modern mfg plant in a low wage US location could be viable, given the edge on shipping costs & speed to market. There are probably lots of small dying rural towns that would jump at the opportunity to rebuild their economy that way. Ya think?

Boy! It's nothing related to the prison labor or child abuse.
The price for the eyeglasses is way too high in United States. For example, I'm from South Korea and I got my eyeglasses for $40. The frame is made in Japan and It's titanium. It's double compressed and it has a UV coating or something. I dropped by several places like Sears or Walmart to get my other eyeglasses. They quoted me $300 for the same specification.

Please don't get me wrong on this.
I prefer to see the competition and the way US government protects consumers by antitrust law or something is, I think, one of the best things I have ever seen. I just like to see more competition and sorta price war on the eyeglasses too.

If any of you has a concern about the labor abuse, you shouldn't buy Nike either. It makes its products from South-Asian countries. What I saw from newspaper was that workers there usually work for 18 hours a day, lots of abuse, and so on.
For some information, do a google search. Here is one I found.

http://www.saigon.com/~nike/

As far as I know, production for the low value added products in US is gone. That's because US has different enconomic system than third world countries. By doing so, I think we all are benefited.

Just my 2Cents.

I'm measuring my head right now.
I've had a prescription for glasses hanging on my fridge for 6 months. I also got laid off from my job and don't have any insurance. Everytime I spend more than a couple hours reading or on the computer I think about getting those glasses made. Next thing that happens is something stupid comes up like needing groceries or socks and bam ... barely enough cash to put up front for that FAR USB port.
Now I'll admit I don't have it quite that bad, however, I've been working for 25 years and not being used to this crappy idea of scarfing coins out of my change jar so I can grab a video,,, man, I do not care if these things are made out of WOOD!
whew, thanks for letting me occupy this space to feel sorry for myself.
