I am planing on buying my BFriend a monitor.

He loves to play games (BF2 alike) so I want to give him a big surprise.

30" is too much for me. So I'll go 24".

I have read about the Samsung SyncMaster 244T and the Dell 24" but Dells is 16ms response Samsung 6ms.

Please you guys, help me choose.

The SyncMaster 244T is a very nice monitor but, rather than spending a large chunk o cash on a monitor that he may not like as much as another, how about a gift card/certificate and a smaller more personal gift?

No, i think the 24" monitor is a very good present. Especially if he games. The only problem is BF2 has a lot of movement and he may not like the tearing coming from his monitor. Also, you have to put into consideration that if he has a bigger monitor, he would have to buy a better graphics card to handle the bigger resolutions. GL with your present.

Too true. Make sure his vid card can drive it. At least a 7900GT or better I'd think.

I have the Dell one at home and at work. Movies, games, whatever, it plays great. I dont have any complaints at all.

Check out http://outlet.dell.com and get a refurb though. Cheaper and usually are people like me who open it, look at it, and go "nah" and send it back.

The big big question is what does this lucky guy have NOW????
Why spend $800 for the Dell 24
Like the Dell 20" is very good deal @$382 IF its better than his current, and wont overwork the vidcard
note the comments for the 20":
Additional ThoughtsI was hesitant to get a LCD monitor, but I'm glad I gave this one a try! I'm an avid gamer who worried about ghosting and the 16ms response time of this monitor. Don't worry! I play BF2142, UT2004 and other games and it looks fantastic. I don't miss my 19" CRT monitor at all. This is a great monitor and it is cheap! The brightness is wonderful and it hardly takes any space on the desk. I love it and would buy it again in a second.

But the 24 Dell is also a stunner , and fine for gaming, tho you may run into aspect ratio issues in games

24" Dell, you'll save a buck or two and its a fantastic monitor... The ghosting your hearing about is probably nonexistent for the average gamer.

I jumped from a 21" Sony Monster (90lbs) > Dell 2005fpw > Dell 2405fpw and the biggest change for me was moving from crt to lcd. The LCD was great for desktop use but when i gamed, it was tough getting used to the tearing but after a couple of months i totally forgot about it. He may not notice it though since some of my friends couldn't tell but at the time, i was a pretty serious gamer (CS > cal-p) and a hardware fanatic. If he's already using an LCD, the 24" Dell would be absolutely STUNNING. I am sure he will love it if you were to go that route. The other LCD i have never had a chance to use but i know that the Dell is the most affordable LCD in its class.

Oh, and last year my gf got me my Sennheiser HD595 + iAudio U2 mp3 player + clothes + a lot of lovin. Sometimes a lot of gifts is better than one big expensive gift. My personal 2c

Cool gift, but doesn't BF2 have problems with widescreen (not supporting...)? Assuming all 24" are widescreen.

There may be a hack to make it work in that particular game. Otherwise, you can use monitor scaling to display a standard aspect ratio at a reduced native resolution. What that does is letter boxes the monitor so your display is smaller, but still uses the correct number of pixels so you don't get blurring. This would also work well for demanding games until you got the $ for a new gfx card.

As for a recommendation... I'm extremely happy with my Dell 24". All of my experiences with Dell LCDs have been positive. I imagine that's all I'll buy in the future unless they really blow it.

OP, you might also consider the Gateway 24" monitor. I've heard some pretty good things about it and it should be right in line with the price of the Dell. The nice thing with a 24" monitor is that you should be able to run 1:1 pixel mapping so that if it doesn't support widescreen or you need to drop resolution you'll still end up with about the same size screen as you'd have at that same resolution on a smaller display (so for instance 16x12/16x10 you'd get about 20").
