At 12:00 p.m., Eastern Time (ET), President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to the students of America. (Please note that this is a change from the originally scheduled time.) During this special address, the president will speak directly to the nation?s children and youth about persisting and succeeding in school. The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning.

The U.S. Department of Education encourages students of all ages, teachers, and administrators to participate in this historic moment by watching the president deliver the address, which will be broadcast live on the White House Web site (http://www.whitehouse.gov/live/) and on C-SPAN at 12:00 p.m., ET. We also encourage educators to use this moment to help students get focused and inspired to begin the new academic year.

i am not sure i agree with this for younger students, high school age kids, sure, they can understand that politicians are biased, but for elementary age kids, i don't think they can understand that politicians have unspoken agendas

It will be one big agenda push, nothing more. I would hope it's not, but I just don't see that happening. How much do we have to drink when he says "community action" or "volunteerism"?

It's not everyday or even every year that a President addresses Students. I didn't realize that encouraging kids to do well in School was such a Political hot potato.

Sure they do, but it's not a Conspiracy to brainwash the kids. Appearances like this are good exposure and show activity, that's the "ulterior" motive.

We'll have to wait until he's done spewing his crap at kids to make that decision. Like I said, I would hope it's different, but it's obama. We know exactly what he's trying to do and what he'll say and it will be puke worthy.

It seems you are assuming omnipotence on the man here. I rather doubt he had anything to do with the phrasing.

Sounds like a good day to take off work, keep the kids home from school, and spend a nice family day together.

That's the kind of community activism I can get behind. Maybe you can organize other parents to do the same? And make sure you write a letter to the school telling them why.

Interesting. If I were a history/government/civics teacher, I'd definitely be letting my students watch. However, I am a math teacher and this has nothing to do with mathematics. Maybe if we were ahead of schedule for their lessons I would turn on the tube for them....which isn't the case.

I really don't get the outrage here. If Reagan, Bush 1, or Bush 2 were to do a similar address there wouldn't be this outcry from the same people complaining now...hmmm...

For students :

Who is the President of the United States?
What do you think it takes to be President?
To whom do you think the President is going to be speaking?
Why do you think he wants to speak to you?
What do you think he will say to you?
What is the President trying to tell me?
What is the President asking me to do?
What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

Some nice ideas for teachers:

Have students "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the President. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students acountable to their goals."

Write goals on index cards to post around the classroom

Interview and share about their goals with one another

Obama will be demonstrating to the kiddies that he is their special friend - and he has special tasks for them to do so both he and they can have hope for a new happiness built upon the founding promise.

The President of the United States has issues he has positions on? The scandal.

The right is treating him like a candidate, not the President, demanding 'equal time'.

Sorry, righties, there are areas where you deserve a voice, but you are not the President of the United States, and you don't get equal political visibility.

Things like the Republicans getting a say on the radio address, following the State of the Union, fine, but you don't get to stand next to him at press conferences with your views.

You don't get to sit next to him on all foreign visits to heads of state ensuring your opinions are equally voiced. And he can give a speech to schoolchildren as the President.

So, let's get this straight:

You're against government doing pretty much anything but protecting its citizens and running the criminal justice system.

Now, you strongly imply you think community action and volunteerism are a crock.

So, in the world you envision, who exactly visits the elderly when they just need a friendly person to talk to for a few hours a week. Who looks out for home-bound people that can't fully fend for themselves? Where do kids go when they're struggling with algebra and their parents aren't any good at math (or science, or world history)? Who mans the volunteer fire companies? Who helps clean up the parks?

Oh, let me guess: In the imaginary world of Spidey, every person is magically self-sufficient. They know every school subject well enough to help their own kids. Every elderly person has giving relatives to help out. No fires start in towns where everyone is really careful. No one litters parks in communities of totally self-sufficient people No one falls ill or loses a job or has mental problems.

You're a hateful, cynical, LITTLE man.

Who is asking for equal time? I even did a cntl+F on that page searching for republican with zero results. Faux outrage?

Another waste of time. I wish he'd spend a little less time on useless speeches and focus on doing actual work. "Historic moment" my butt. Parents should take this as a teaching opportunity, to remind their kids that when they get to be voting age they can do better than electing such a lousy president.

As usual you babble on senslessly. Only someone without a real job could spend the inordinate amount of time here you do typing out whole pages of text.

The one place I DEMAND a voice is in the way my children are raised and what and how they are taught. It is the single biggest responsibility a person has once they have a child. The last thing I want is young children having to sit through anything this president has to say and then have teachers reinforce it afterward. It is time for parents to take more responsibility for teaching their children. Look at where relying on the public school system has taken us.
