GWB asked students to write letters to him. letters to tell GWB ways for him to achieve his goals.

I only point this out to show how completely redunkulous this issue has become from BOTH sides.

The President is going to say a harmless speech...he is going to challenge the kids to do good in school....and every partisan asshole out there is going to look really stupid for blowing this thing completely out of proportion.

My kids were not part of anything like that.

And sure, you can try to claim it's going to be harmless, but it still doesn't make it right for him to do - especially when it looks to be self-serving and/or political. They got caught and now have changed things it seems... yep...nothing to see here... :bluepillsmiley;

I don't see why anyone is against people pulling their kids that day. It's their/your right/responsibility as a parent to choose what they are exposed to. I've not been keeping up on this exact issue due to being on the road but if anyone thinks that the idea was just some "innocent" little pep talk then they've been drinking too much of the change colored kool-aid. BHO (and any President for that matter) doesn't exert effort for trivial things. But hey - it's good to see people paying attention!

To think your kids are going to be hurt by a speech from the president of the united states is asinine. Of course, it's your right for your kids to control what your kids see however I and the majority of adults think its a gross parental error.

To CADsortaGuy and others whom aren't allowing their children to see Obama's speech. What do you predict Obama is going to say? How will this impact your children?

Where did I state they were going to be "hurt"? I do as a parent have every right and responsibility to choose what they are exposed to. A good parent does that anyway...

From the looks of it, it was a piss poorly planned stunt and he/they got called on it. They've already removed the what can you do for BHO BS - so that alone shows how incompetent and or partisan this was from the start.
I don't know what exactly he is going to say and thus I can not opine on how it would impact my child. However, due to the nature and circumstances - I'm happy our school district does not have school that day.

Oh, you don't know what he's exactly what he's going to say but I just merely asked for a prediction. Of course, even though you don't know you still think the speech somehow bad and you evidently don't want your kids seeing it.

Seriously, this is just asinine and partisan fuckery at it's finest.

Uhmmm, no it doesn't. I'll ask you the same question I asked Spidey. If a child is throwing a temper tantrum and his mom eventually gives in to him, does that mean that the kid was right?

Yes, damn the president for telling kids to work hard and stay in school. :disgust:*

*While we don't know exactly what he's going to say, Robert Gibbs did mention this. He also mentioned that some school districts still have Huckleberry Finn banned.

Have you read the lesson plans from the department of education? That's the problem, not the message. It's disgusting just how bad they are to make Obama out to be something more than just the president. It's downright creepy.

I'm sorry, but this just shows how far off the wagon the far right has gone. They are seriously starting to look like a bunch of fucking loons by attacking Obama for wanting to encourage kids to stay in school and do better.

Does EVERYTHING have to be a freaking political argument to them?

Apparently so.

I especially like how guys like Caddie are now thriving on what used to complain about, it's actually quite pathetic to watch him post these days.

I really wonder how much impact this speech will have on the kids....

The whole things seems pretty useless - just a huge publicity stunt by the White House.

Again, more bullshit subterfuge. The president is a role model to many kids, not just Obama, ANY president. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the president inspiring kids to do good things, do well in school, and be responsible. The right seems to dissect everything this administration does with the same asinine approach to every situation, that Obama is out to somehow brainwash us all. Frankly, many on the right are starting to sound a bit 'tin-foil hat' if you ask me.

To be honest, do you know what really scares me? These parents that are outraged that Obama wants to speak to the kids, the ones that are so up in arms and afraid he will brainwash them into communism, the ones that drive around with Obama communism stickers all over their car shouting how Obama is screwing up the country and sending us all to hell. I feel bad for their kids, being raised by such fear mongering and small minded parents. That is what truly scares me. IMO, they are the ones doing the brainwashing, much more so than Obama ever could.

I don't think it will have all that much impact, kids will be kids. But heck, if it does indeed inspire at least some kids to be more responsible and do well, I think its worth it.

I really don't think this to be much a publicity stunt, in fact the rights; faux outrage about it seems to be why its squarely in the news so much these past few days.

I did read it, and yes, I have absolutely no problems with it. The president is a role model, like him and his policies or not. I would be saying the same if Bush had done the exact same thing while he was in office, in fact I would have liked him to use his position to inspire kids to do what's best for them. But all this outrage over him brainwashing them into socialism? Fucking retarded. Many kids don't understand politics, they don't understand the different sides of the aisle and the real differences between the parties. All they understand is that he is the leader of our country and holds a position that MANY kids aspire to hold one day.

Lessons of history? So by scaring people into thinking Obama is Lenin, or Hitler, that's the best thing for this country? Bullshit. Republicans are scared because Obama doesn't follow the same mold as the previous administration, where its ok to discriminate against people because they are homosexual, where its ok to torture terrorists, where its ok do do whatever the fuck we want because were America.

I said it before, I'll say it again. BULLSHIT SUBTERFUGE. A non-issue made a political issue by fear mongering idiots on the right. I'm done here.

Heh, good thing you are done here cause your view is absolutely bad for any democracy. I grew up in Taiwan where leader worshipping was the norm and it started with school. I saw the same school materials that were full of how dear leaders like chiang kai shek was an inspiration, regardless of what his policy was and what he actually did. It took Taiwan 20 years to get out of that fvcked up system, and now I am seeing this BS in the US system. And what's sad is joker like you actually supports it.

I read the linked .pdf.

Even if this was coming from the GWB administration I wouldn't have a problem with it.

There.....I said it.

Like aphex said, this is the type of work we actually WANT our role models to be a part of, reaching out to kids to challenge them.

Imagine this, every inner-city classroom is going to air this speech...It is a speech about personal responsibility, taking school seriously, and setting goals.

how is that wrong?

Apparently so.

I especially like how guys like Caddie are now thriving on what used to complain about, it's actually quite pathetic to watch him post these days.

Because Obama will likely attempt to inspire them to stay in school you crazy idiot.

aphex is right, what you guys are doing here is making yourselves look insane. When the speech is released tomorrow all the crazies on the right will go through it with a fine toothed comb trying to find any words that they can freak out about. If they can't find something, they will just say 'we got him to change it, we know it was in there before!' It's a lot like the birthers in the respect that evidence that you were wrong is only considered mounting evidence for the cover up.

For an idea about what presidential speeches to school children have been like in the past, here's Ronald Reagan's speech to school kids in 1988. If Obama said half of the things our good friend Ronnie said (without a peep of opposition from the right I might add), the crazies would go absolutely berserk.

Changing your name doesn't erase the fact that you're always wrong.

It's an aversion to being stalked by Minnesotan bumpkins.

Still bitter from a day at the help desk?

We get it Boober, you hate yourself.

It's OK, I understand how hard it must be to have get up and live your life every day.

If you have to project your feelings onto me to you go right ahead little man.

I already used that insult, you just quoted it.

And hate to break it to you, but you started this back-and-forth, so it's your projection that is sadly, painfully obvious.

Somewhere there are melancholy violins playing just for you, little man.

Seems fairly innocuous to me.

Edit: If in fact this message can do some good, and inner city minority students become inspired by Obama, then that's only a good thing. Hell, shouldn't Republicans love it if some inner city kids can break the poverty cycle, maybe NOT become pregnant or drug addicts at 15, finish school and make something of themselves? Think of how much that would do to end the welfare state we've built in the past 50 years.

Does EVERYTHING have to be a freaking political argument to them?

Apparently so.

I especially like how guys like Caddie are now thriving on what used to complain about, it's actually quite pathetic to watch him post these days.

Actually I am enjoying it immensely

It's like watching pigs wallow in their own shit and happy about it.
