Presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg’s overwhelmingly white crowd

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg held a self-described grassroots campaign rally in Bronzeville on Tuesday night, but the overwhelmingly white audience he drew to the event in a historic black neighborhood reinforced the difficulty the Democratic presidential hopeful has had in connecting with African American voters.​

Buttigieg did not acknowledge the makeup of the audience in his remarks or in answering questions from the 1,000 people at the sold-out event, but did touch on it briefly as he closed the hourlong rally with a plea for his supporters.​

“Find the people who don’t look like most of you in this room and let them know they have the chance, not just to support this campaign, but to shape it,” Buttigieg said.​

Why is he having such difficulty connecting with people of color? During the debates I thought he did really well and was probably the most well spoken and had the most thoughtful comments of any of the candidates, so why is he doing so poorly (the article says he’s polling at 0% with blacks)?

I still have my fingers crossed he comes out ahead and wins the nomination, I’d vote for him for sure.

If by non-whites you mean simply blacks - it has been shown that blacks are overall not in favor of homosexuals. So on that regard, it's not surprising to me.

Go back through my posts. I’ve stated on here sever times I find him to be very articulate and smart and seemed to have middle of the road ideas (from what I’d seen). Yes, I would vote for him. You can try and paint me as some kind of far right partisan and apparently a racist as shown above but the reality is far from it. The world and the people in it aren’t as simple as the mold you try and fit them into.

It's common knowledge but it has gotten substantially better over the last 10 years.

That homophobic streak is steeped in religion not against gay people per se.

Biden currently has the lions share of the black vote. That could change if Pete starts winning a few early races. Obama was way behind in the black vote vs Clinton until he won Iowa.

I've been rooting for Mayor Pete early and hope he does well.

I know that blacks have overall some of the most homophobic views of any racial group but I really don’t think that’s why he has literally no support from them or over people of color. I don’t know the reason but I just have a hunch it’s not that. Mayor Pete’s sexual orientation has been brought up but not much and certainly not to the point it defines him or his candidacy.
