Instead they ran an incredibly flawed and corrupt politician and Trump came across to many Americans as the antithesis of that. Hindsight is 20/20 about Trump but at the time he captured the mood of America and a desire to flush the country of corruption and the political class.
Did it happen? No. But if you want to understand 2016 you have to understand that. Those that pretend it was Russia that won the election are either naive or lying to themselves. People are tired of the ever increasing government in both size and scope which is driven by an incredibly corrupt political class and it was a fight back against that.
It’s more complicated than that but to point at any one thing about Trump and say well you disagree with him here so why did you vote for him misses much of what 2016 was all about.

1. The best candidate dems can produce is Pete, in you opinion.
2. You would vote for him, stated many times here (this must mean primary, otherwise, its a twofer to the head).
3. You will be voting Trump 2020 (this post)
4. You will be voting in both R and D primaries

I'm similar to UC in some ways. Didn't vote for Trump in 2016 but also didn't care for Hillary and think she was a poor choice for numerous reasons. Prefer Mayor Pete in the Dem contest and registered Dem to vote for him in the primaries. Obviously hope he'll win but am open minded to whoever takes the contest on the Dem side. 100% resolved to not vote Trump in 2020 just like I didn't in 2016. If it's not Mayor Pete, then I'd probably abstain from voting for president if the choice is Bernie, would hold my nose and vote for Harris (honestly another economic populist is the absolute last thing we need as our next president), and would vote for (in varied degrees of enthusiasm) for any of the remaining declared candidates who will participate in the next debate. Won't pledge to vote Dem no matter what since it's not impossible that some dark horse Dem candidate could enter the race late and win the nomination and that candidate would be completely unacceptable to me.
