Pretentious Book of the Month?

This must be age old - but the first one i noticed was the Da Vinchi code last year, then it was the harry potter books (idk maybe a few new ones have come out?), then Kite Runner, now theres a book by that same guy who wrote Kite Runner.

I see people, mostly women 18-40 carrying these books, in hard copy, like it is the Holy Bible.

So funny.

Do these people think that they are intelligent because they read a book that about a million other people did?

I read The Da Vinci Code a few years after it came out. I figured that since the hype never died that it might be a good book. I was sadly mistaken. I have also noticed that the number of different books on the shelves at Borders has dwindled while the fluff has slowly taken over the store.

That's a failed argument. All you've established is that people read books that are popular. You might as well include everything else of literary value in that statement, because undoubtedly just as many read them as well.

What's your argument to support that it's pretentious?
