Thanks!
Well, I looked at the drive carefully through the plastic container but I don't see any marks/scratches that would indicate the drive was installed. I seem to remember buying a seagate 120 gb sata a couple of years ago for a friend, and I think I was a little surprised when it came in one of these snap-close clear plastic containers and I can't remember for sure but I think that it wasn't also in a bag. I wonder if they are less sensitive to static--or maybe the clear container is protective. The SATA interface is sort of recessed, but the circuitry is exposed on the bottom.
I checked and I see the drives are actually covered by a 5 year warranty. Seagate seems to really trust the quality of its drives. A couple of years ago almost everyone reduced it to 1 year, except WD on it's JB line. Funny.
Last year I bought a barebone kit from TD, and I could tell for sure that it was something that was previously built. To make things more annoying, the IBM drive (which was actually sealed in the bag) was a dud--it did spin up but wasn't detected by the computer. They exchanged it no problem.
I would think it should be in an anti-static bag and it's strange it wasn't.
Tek.
