The link is wrong, but the drive is available. I don't think it's a $45 MIR, I don't think it's instant. Try this link for the SATA.

They were back in stock on Monday. Also, now a flat-rate $9.99 Ground shipping up to 40 pounds, so find lots of deals. Added a link to a decent case for the price.

Note that it is an OEM drive so no cables (or software) included. The software can be downloaded from Maxtor's site (if you have internet access when building your computer) but, for me at least, I don't have any extra SATA cables lying around.

Also read the warranty carefully to make sure the OEM drive qualifies-TigerDirect has a well deserved notorious reputation regarding rebates.

Now what's the deal with TD rebate? They tell you to send in your rebate certified mail with tracking number. Are they for real? If you send it regular mail, are they going to conveniently lose it?

Almost certainly. That's how they got their horrible reputation.

I got both the Seagate 300 GB SATA and the 300 GB ATA from Tiger Direct. I notice that they both come in clear plastic containers. The ATA one is also in the usual silver anti-static bag, but the SATA one is bare. Both have yellow stickers sealing the clear containers. I thought drives always came in the anti-static bags, or do some of the SATA ones not come in the bags because of the SATA interface isn't sensitive to static?

The certified mail thing is if you want to get their "rebate guarantee" and they limit that to 5 per year. The rebate is like any other rebate though. In fact they use this service called OnRebate which makes it sort of easier since you don't have to hand-write on a form, and they give you options of getting the rebate instantly once they process it, but charge you a fee, also they pay with paypal with a fee, or just send you a check 4-6 weeks later. Why can't they just send it immediately?

They both should come in an anti-static bag. It may have been an oversight, or you may have gotten a return. That said, I'd probably test the drive, and if it works ok, not worry about it since it has a 3-year warranty.

Easy, they give you the money faster in exchange for a 10% cut. It's actually a pretty novel idea. But either way, you can get paid via Paypal, which saves everyone hassle.

Thanks!

Well, I looked at the drive carefully through the plastic container but I don't see any marks/scratches that would indicate the drive was installed. I seem to remember buying a seagate 120 gb sata a couple of years ago for a friend, and I think I was a little surprised when it came in one of these snap-close clear plastic containers and I can't remember for sure but I think that it wasn't also in a bag. I wonder if they are less sensitive to static--or maybe the clear container is protective. The SATA interface is sort of recessed, but the circuitry is exposed on the bottom.

I checked and I see the drives are actually covered by a 5 year warranty. Seagate seems to really trust the quality of its drives. A couple of years ago almost everyone reduced it to 1 year, except WD on it's JB line. Funny.

Last year I bought a barebone kit from TD, and I could tell for sure that it was something that was previously built. To make things more annoying, the IBM drive (which was actually sealed in the bag) was a dud--it did spin up but wasn't detected by the computer. They exchanged it no problem.

I would think it should be in an anti-static bag and it's strange it wasn't.

Tek.

I would rather get a seagate with a 5 year warranty or the newest hitachi DeathStar. Despite the name pun, those japanese makes good hard drives that are faster in seektime and better overall (in temps and sound) than Maxtor.

They didn't get the name DeathStar for nothing. I had one crap out and talking to the tech at work (over 300) systems, these things die in droves.

Well, Hitachi took over IBM's drive business. Those 70 gig IBM DESKSTARS were involved in a class action lawsuit since they failed so much. I guess the name DEATHSTAR is an internal Hitachi company joke. It's ironic that they have the same problem as the old 70 gigers.
