its an MSI sis 645dx board with 533 bus support, and a celeron 2.0 128k (northwood based) for $99. thats insanely cheap seeing as the celeron 2.0 usually goes fo rmore than $85

this seems like a lot better deal than the celeron 1.8 and ECS board they were running just 2 days ago.

not really. since u call celeron 128k cache 2.0 i'll call the 256k 3.0 u can get a 1.1 ghz for less then50 bux shipped with heatsink. then overclock it in a bx or later board to 1.5ghz easy. u have to do a mod for bx, but its covered on overclockers.com

u used to oc celly 2's to 850. stability was bad.

Is this the same celeron that has a really bad rep for being dog slow?

i picked up the combo today.

the mobo had the "previously molested" sticker on it, and the CPU was definitely used. had AS3 on it.

the mobo upon opening was new though, nothign was opened inside. the mobo is pretty nice , 5 pci, 533bus support, and supports pc2700. voltage tweaks go up to a 1.65 volts which isnt that great.

popped the celeron in and booted it at 2667 with 1.65 . works fine. very good deal. on the reciept it says the CPU is $49.99 and the mobo is $50. my friend tried to immediately return the board , since he didnt need it, almost worked but well it didnt quite work.

A month or so ago I was in Fry's and bought a Duron. The first one he brought me was obviously used and had AS3 on it. I say no way I'm buying that and finally on the 3rd chip he brings me a fresh new chip. The guy wasn't happy but no way I'm buying someone else's return. If they bring you used stuff, make 'em take it back.

Ya either tell them to get me a new one, or try to talk them down $30 if I can

My first Intel combo was the Soyo Dragon Lite and the Celery 1.7 (P-4 architecture) at Fry's for $99 on Black Friday after the crowds had settled. Just depends on what your looking for. Fry's has some kickin' prices if it's really on sale & (if it's something you need).Must say, I have not seen any $500 laptops there lately though. Oh well, I don't really need one anyway. I dig Fry's combo prices. Enjoy your new $99 rigs. As they say, "the price is right".

I went to the Fountain Valley and the Anahiem Fry's yesterday and they both only had opened motherboards, so I didn't even bother. Their CPUs were probably returned as well. The Anahiem one had about 20 of those MSI boards, ALL of them opened. Needless to say, I didn't get one, but would have loved one.

well all the motherboards at my fry's had that "opened" sticker, but the mobo bags werent even opened inside. i dont think of it as that big a deal, i can always return the board and get an exchange, and well the CPU works and i can exchange that. the exchange is a hassle, but well this is a great deal, as the CPU new would cost $85 or so online, and the board at least $60 or so

Are these retail boxed CPUs? Man, your best buys are ALWAYS at FRYs... they need to set up shops in the mid-west and east coast

OEM no box, no heatsink/fan. Just the cpu in its own antistatic package. When they bring the cpu to you take a look at it, make sure it doesn't have thermal compound on it.

i personally bought both combos.

being a nice guy i am sending the celeron 1.7 combo to teezle. figured i'd just decide which one i didnt want. anwyays, i dont know if the ECS is so much better.

granted the ECS board has a p4x333 chipset, sdram and ddr support and usb 2 , and ethernet on board.

the MSI is a 645dx which is slower, has no sdram support no usb 2 and no ethernet. but one more PCI slot, and well its an MSI and thats an ECS. the MSI also has voltage tweaks (albeit not very high and the ECS doesnt). the celeron 2.0 is also a lot more overclockable (mine was a used celeron 2.0 had paste on it, but it does 2.667 fine so i'm not complaining).
