Found this in our local paper. The store is one of our discount grocery stores called Aldi's. They might just be in the Chicagoland area. I have no idea why the got into the computer biz.

  • Mid-tower case with sound, S-composite video,
Firewire, and USB ports on the case front
  • Pentium 4 1.6 ghz
  • 256 meg SDRAM
  • Sony 1.4 meg floppy
  • nVidia GeForce 3 Ti200
  • 16x DVD
  • Sony 16x10x40 CD-RW
  • Seagate 80gb ATA/100 HD
  • Medion 56k modem
  • Unknown make 6-channel Dolby Digital audio
  • Generic keyboard, 10/100 NIC, Microsoft scroll mouse,
    and CreativeLabs speakers
  • Windows XP Home Edition

12 month warranty and toll-free 24/7 tech support.

I think this is their website:
Medion

Enjoy,

Bob

I priced it out at Pricewatch for the cheapest of each item, and it came out to $842 plus about $60 shipping. Also includes Microsoft Works Suite 2001.

Two entries on resellerratings, both seem pretty decent. They use name brand components but apparently returns are kinda slow. That's one helluva deal though for what you get.

Does anyone have any more info on the tech specs? I see from Medion's web site that the sound card is based on the CMI 8738 chipset. At least that is what the sound driver is for on the site. It also looks like this is the ONLY computer they sell.

Don't seem to find any more specs on the system. I was curious what motherboard was in it.

I did find a location map for Aldi's: Aldi's map.

On their web site, they say they are going to have a 25" Orion stereo TV on Friday for $169. Here is their specials page for Nov. 23rd: Aldi's B&M specials

This is gonna be great if they keep expanding their electronics. I grocery shop there (The sell some kick-ass frozen hotwings).

I just hope they open at their regular store hours of 9AM and my store has them in stock. It says that not all stores will carry the special items.

I have been a lurker here for a few months and recently I have been looking for decent computer package for my parents. I have built a few computers before but I don?t know if wanted to that with my parents. When I saw the ALDI?s ad I had to do my 1st post.
No rebates, no waiting, no hassle. Wow.

BACKGROUND:
ALDI?s is a thrifty store with a mostly food items and those usually being non-major brand (kinda like OEM). Their target market is lower income and they do it quite well. They have about 575 stores and most of them are in the Midwest.

WARNING THEY ONLY TAKE CASH AND DEBIT CARDS!!!

To attain the awesome low prices that they have they cut out all the middle men-out and extra costs. Meaning NO checks, website purchases, credit cards, and/or financing. NONE. They even charge people for paper or plastic grocery bags. Tip: To be really thrifty bring your own bag. =)

My only concern is that I have never seen anything over $20 at ALDI?s. Having a computer is not their target audience. Also, who has heard of Medion? Looking at their website it is the only computer they make. The question is..is it any good??? I plan on buying one and letting you all know. I thought Best Buy had the best full computer deal, but ALDI?s came out of nowhere and blew all the other stores away. The really crazy part is that they are not ever close to being an electronic store!! What?s next a Burger King computer??

They are also selling a Medion 17" Flat Display monitor for $99.99. The monitor in the paper doesn't look like a flat display, but for the specs they have the following;

17" Flat Display Color Monitor
15.8" Viewable Area
.27mm Dot Pitch
max. resolution 1280x1024
1024x768 at 85Hz

edit-here is a link to the monitor

Where's this computer getting the 3! firewire ports from? Is video input (capture) done through the GeForce?

Slud,

The ad says '3 FireWire IEEE 1394, 1x front/2x rear'. It does not specify where they are. Also, the computer has one of those front panels for accessories. There is an A/V Input section with 3 plugs (Composite, S-video, and Audio) as well as a microphone input, 2 USB slots, and what appears to be the one FireWire port.

If I wasn't swimming in machines right now, I would be tempted......

I went and got one of these today. Case not so hot looking with a bulbous silver globe power button, but otherwise this thing is nice for the price! Thanks to all for all the specs and links to sites. Medion seems like a go-between for value minded companies that want quality value minded products. It was great...no lines, no shoving, no parking hassles, no tickets to get into the store, in and out quickly, and best of all NO REBATES! Total was $741 w/ NJ sales tax. Word has it from the manager that they got 20 in for today (Nov. 23), and they can reorder. This was not a special Black Friday price! Thanks cardiac for the op.

msh111, how's the performance? A co-worker bought one (Which is why I researched this in the first place), brought it home and hooked it up this a.m., and that thing rocks! I got him a monitor last month when OD had the KDS 17" for $59. He's got a nice little setup now for under $800. Yeah, the case is a little gaudy, but it is convenient.....I haven't convinced him to let me tear into it yet to see what MB is in it

Hehe I love buying expensive electronics equipment from a retailer that also sells shrimp rings!!!

Don't have an Aldi near me so I guess it won't be too hard to resist this deal.

<< Aldi's smells like pee >>

I guess that depends on what part of the country you're in.

I like Aldi hamburgers and brats. They're cheaper than a computer, too.

I bought the system here in Chicago. There wound up being quite a line for these systems. Luckily I got their about 15 minutes before they opened and was about 15-20 in line. The store only got 24 of them. I know someone who was waiting in line received a phone call from a friend who was standing in a line of about 30 for the computers at a different Aldi. When I checked out there was about 50 people behind me hoping for a computer. They weren't so lucky.

This system looks to be imported from Germany. Both the motherboard and video card have Medion on them, so I don't know who the actual manufacturer is of those components. The modem has the firewire ports on it for both the back and front. Creative anyone? The speakers are Creative Labs SBS-35s. The hard drive is Seagates 80GB 5400 RPM ATA/100 hard drive. I don't know who makes the DVD drive yet, but it comes with WinDVD and other software. The memory is Samsung. All in all a terrific system at $700.
