That graphics card is worth $200 alone. The Pentium 4 and motherboard are easily worth $300. The hard drive is probably worth $150. $70 for DVD-ROM. $100 for Sony CD-RW. $30 for the modem. $100 for Win XP. $30 for the RAM.

Right there, that's worth $1,000. And that doesn't include ethernet, case, keyboard, speakers, etc. And, it's already assembled!

Does it actually come with a full copy of WinXP or is it just installed on the computer only? If it came with a copy also.. that would be hot! But if it didn't then my question is.. isn't it illegal to sell a new computer with WinXP on it without the license?

It comes with a legal license and Win XP Home edition. Like most companies, the Win XP is on the recovery CD. That is how M$ is forcing most OEMs to ship Windows these days.

I guess my experience yesterday in CHicago was a little differetn, when me and my brother get thier 8:40 there were 15 people ahead in a line to get in (most but not all were there to get the computer), they had 24 computers, all sold out by 9:15, luckily my brother was one the 24 who got it.
It is an awesome deal, if I did not already have 3 computers, I would have brought it also.

Just got back from a little grocery shopping at my local Aldi's (MMMmmm, shrimp rings), and the manager happened to be out on the floor. He said that this was NOT a one time thing for the 23rd, and that they are getting more in stock at that price. So, check your Aldi's periodically if you want one.

Just some more information: My friend paul, of Beige Records, returned from touring in Germany recently. He called me on Wednesday to alert me of this computer, and mentioned that he'd seen similar sales at Aldi's in Germany. Aldi's is a German company, and apparently this kind of thing (computers and groceries) is a bit more common there..

What's the mobo in this system? In my experience the key to a happy, stable sytem over the long run is the quality of the mobo.

The mobo is a micro-ATX motherboard with no name with the exception of Medion on it. Obviously they OEMed it from someone else.

This company has sold computers for a while and yes, in the US their "Aldi" has been the reseller. They are based in Germany I believe (or were at least) and I have worked on a German Medion Laptop that is about 2 years old. It was cheap and the components were decent (stupid keyboard was in German, so is the support!). I had to use babblefish to translate the updates page and then I found out that they did not support their (then) 1 year old product!!! They have not replied to any of my e-mails (in both German and English), but the Laptop is working alright (just with out the correct sound or CDRW drivers!!!)

Good computer, bad service = probably work out okay for someone smart enought to be at anandtech but limited support from them = suck!

<edit> Just now looking at their webpage again for the first time in many months, it's been translated! BUT only support is for this new computer you guys are talking about and NOT for any past models (or foreign models). To me this is suck . . . (apparently to me grammer is also suck) . . . give me appropriate drivers! NOW!

My god, I can't believe I finally was able to login (email trouble). Anyhoo, anyone in WI looking for this system apparently will have to go to Platteville or Rockford. According to the manager @ the W. Madison store, noone else in the state (yeah, yeah, R'ford is in Il, but it wants to be in WI) can get them. Still worth it though, damn fine deal.

Yes ALDI is rather big in Germany, and that PC looks like it has been designed with the quality oriented German consumer in mind. Major components are from good major suppliers, (Seagate HDD, Sony FDD, CDR), and the video card plus the nice design of the front access bay should make it fast and easy to use.

The machine looks very solid and extremely thought out in terms of allowing all kinds of applications. They even had a flyer that showed how to connect all kinds of devices (DV Camera, PDA, Monitor, etc.).

I would bet it is a great buy, and ALDI while cheap in general has a pretty good standard for the stuff they are selling, and I doubt that they would want a bunch of returned machines or unsatisfied customers to deal with (too little staff), so this machine is a no-brainer.

With the latest NVidia drivers and the clock speed upped to 183 on the video using NVMax, the 3DMark2001 result was 5084.
