pretty simple MS Excel question

pretty basic request/question

is there a way to assign a numerical value to a text field. let's say i have spots C6:C236 filled with the entry Florida and I want to be able to autosum the number of Florida entries. is there an easy way to do that using a combination of formulas and functions?

That is the COUNT function. There are several versions of the function. Goto the functions list, find the COUNT functions and it will tell you what each does. Choose the correct one for what you want to do, give it the variable "Florida" and the area c6:c236 and it will return the number of fields that contain the word florida.
